Job Summary In this working manager role, you will lead, manage, and work side by side with a diverse group of smart, innovative, problem solving developers in the development and support of complex, high visibility, enterprise solutions. The successful incumbent will partner effectively with staff at all levels from across the Laboratory and understand business and technical requirements to deliver highly reliable and easy to use solutions that enable the mission.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the development of innovative enterprise solutions using NREL's current tool(s) best suited to solve complex operations challenges
Partner with system stewards and developers to translate business requirements into technical solutions
Manage day to day application development activities for several competing projects and maintenance efforts to ensure delivery of high quality systems - on time and within budget
Establish and abide by standards, policies, procedures that reinforce the software development lifecycle, NREL IT standards and industry best practices
Collaborate with peers in project/relationship management, data management, infrastructure engineering and cyber security to produce sustainable solutions aligned with NREL's IT data, infrastructure and security requirements
Ensure consistent application code integrity, confirm documentation of capabilities, participate in code reviews
Solve complex technical problems and effectively communicate solutions to non-technical management/peers
Hire, develop and retain exceptional software engineering staff
Remain current on emerging technologies that align with NREL's enterprise solution needs to inform future IT strategy and budget requests

Knowledge (Education, Training, Certifications and Experience):
Relevant PhD and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Master's Degree and 6 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Previous government experience, preferably in a DOE or National Laboratory environment
Previous experience with ITIL framework, Subversion, GitHub and Service Now
Demonstrated understanding and application of software development principles, concepts, practices and standards
Experience managing and leading senior developers that possess a wide range of technology language experience
History of developing and retaining a diverse group of developers

Generally viewed as subject matter expert for group or work units. Excellent organization, project management, budgeting, interpersonal and communication skills.
