Thacher School is an independent, boarding school (9-12) with a rigorous academic and co-curricular program focused on excellence, community, and appreciation of the outdoors. We seek a full-time Associate Director of College Counseling for a one-year appointment as a sabbatical replacement.
The principal responsibilities of an Associate Director include:
Assisting and advising students (juniors – seniors) and their families with all aspects of the college search and application process
Writing letters of recommendation and providing feedback on student essays
Managing regular communication with students and parents throughout the process
Engaging with families in all college related decisions including course selection, testing, summer experiences, athletic recruitment, etc.
Maintaining regular communication with students, their parents and academic advisors
Helping to organize, coordinate and run various meetings and events with parents and/or college admission officers
Overseeing standardized testing at Thacher which serves as a testing center for SAT and ACT
Helping with communication pieces such as – board report or presentations
Fostering relationships with college representatives nationally/internationally
Advocating for students during the application/selection process via counselor calls or email correspondence with college/university representatives
Participating in professional development opportunities such as counselor visits to colleges and annual conferences such as NACAC and ACCIS
Staying abreast of trends in higher education and college admission at selective and highly selective colleges/universities
Representing Thacher at various events that promote the school’s reputation and role as an educational leader
Engaging in various school activities/duties (dormitory advising, duty, coaching or camping) outside of college counseling that support the work of the office as well as the Thacher community as a whole
The ideal candidate has 3-5 years of experience in selective college admission and/or college counseling in independent schools and is eager to be fully committed to Thacher’s mission and community. Given the boarding experience, an Associate Director must be ready to engage fully in the process with students and families, since parents are not a daily presence in their children’s lives. This can often require work beyond the traditional work day in the office. Our goal is to find an individual who is polished, a quick study and problem solver who is comfortable with independently handling a task or project. He/she must have strong interpersonal and public speaking abilities as well as:
A genuine and demonstrated interest in the field of college admission and the work it requires with students, parents, colleges and their representatives.
Excellent writing skills and an eye for detail.
Qualities of a team player who is ready to roll up his/her sleeves, values and appreciates the art of collaboration in an office that is close-knit.
Proficiency in MS Office, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Naviance.
Strong listening skills, necessary for counseling in challenging situations.
The energy, patience, perspective, and sense of humor to work effectively with high achieving and driven students and their families.
This is an 11-month position that often requires work on weekends and after hours.
