Rocky Hill School seeks an experienced Director of Athletics to lead and develop the athletic program of the school.
Founded in 1934, Rocky Hill School is an independent, coeducational, non-denominational, college preparatory day school in East Greenwich, RI made up of 300 students in preschool through grade 12. The Director of Athletics, in conjunction with the senior administrative team, will evolve and implement an innovative strategic plan for athletics within the whole school/whole child context of a small independent school. At this exciting time in the School’s history, there is tremendous opportunity to further develop the athletics program. Responsible for the administration of all aspects of a school-wide athletic program, the Director of Athletics oversees the Lower and Middle School physical education classes, a Lower School skills development program, and Middle and Upper School interscholastic sports teams and co-curricular programs. The Director of Athletics should lead the program with energy, enthusiasm, and school spirit, serving as a role model of professionalism for students, faculty, and coaches. S/he will be a member of the senior Administrative team and will report to the Assistant Head of School for Internal Affairs. The Assistant Athletic Director & Athletic Trainer, and Lower School & Middle School Physical Education Teachers, fall under the purview of the Director of Athletics.
Develop, organize, supervise, and evaluate the entire program of intramural and interscholastic athletics for the School.
In partnership with the administrative team, research, review, and update the offered programs to fit the School’s needs.
Develop and implement an Athletic Strategic Plan.
Oversee the Athletic Boosters program.
Oversee the hiring of coaches.
Regularly mentor and evaluate coaches, providing support and timely feedback.
Ensure the proper maintenance and security of all athletic equipment and athletic facilities, fields, courts, and boats, working with the Director of Plant Operations and the Assistant Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer.
Oversee the Physical Education (PE) department in terms of curriculum and staffing.
Be cognizant of state regulations in relation to PE, athletics, and safety.
Manage an annual budget that incorporates athletics, physical education, and athletic training needs.
Work closely with the advancement team to:
Promote public awareness of athletic achievements, both internally and externally.
Provide the admissions office with the latest school/league requirements and school offerings in support of the application and retention of student athletes.
Schedule various events, such as Alumni athletic events.
Maintain and submit to the development office records of team and athletic accomplishments for historical purposes.
Promote athletics on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
Works closely with the Director of College Counseling to provide support for student athletes hoping to participate in college athletics.
Represent the School at various state, regional, and national athletic associations.
Attend necessary School meetings and events.
Ensure clear, accurate, and timely communication to all constituencies regarding all elements of the athletic program.
Strategically develop, manage, and supervise the athletics program for the Middle and Upper Schools:
Review annually and update all handbooks and co-curricular policies as needed.
Inventory and provide all necessary supplies and equipment for PE and all athletic activities so that safety requirements are met.
Track all co-curricular sign up information for student athletes.
Schedule, track, and adjust all athletic contests.
Coordinate game official coverage and payment for teams.
Coordinate table management coverage of athletic events.
Understand and manage the implication/communication of league.
Communicate with league sport commissioners.
Oversee the purchase of athletic uniforms, equipment, and awards.
Arrange and run seasonal co-curricular award ceremonies.
REQUIREMENTS AND ATTRIBUTES
5+ years of experience as Director of Athletics or Associate in an independent school or college environment
Bachelor’s degree in related field, master’s preferred
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Fluency with computers and social media
Knowledge of best practices in athletics
Collaborative leadership style and desire to partner with administrators, teachers, coaches, students, and staff to advance the School
Strong management skills including attention to detail, facility with data, creative problem solving, and solid organizational skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
