THE OPPORTUNITY: Hawai'i Preparatory Academy (HPA) seeks to hire an experienced communications leader to transform our institutional communication mindset and establish a program that is shaped by strategic intent. Having recently completed an ambitious strategic plan that capitalizes on the school's unparalleled cultural, ecological, and geographic location on Hawai'i Island, we have a renewed passion for our unique and compelling vision. Having just combined the departments of Admissions, Advancement, and Marketing & Communication, the External Relations team is poised to share our story while at the same time evolving the perception of the school significantly through improved intentionality, efficiency, efficacy, and mindfulness.
POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the director of external relations and working as a member of the senior administrative team, the director will craft and adhere to a formal communication plan and will oversee all relevant strategies. Providing vision and context during administrative strategic discussions, the director will work closely with the assistant director and team to establish quality measures and to shape content and messaging for HPA’s internal and external constituencies. Primary objectives include raising HPA's visibility, increasing applicant yield, supporting an ambitious fundraising campaign, clarifying messaging to target audiences, and assuming leadership of a school brand process. The director will oversee and actively contribute to all communication mediums, including print publications, e-newsletters, web and social media streams (including video), and select events. In addition, the director will coordinate all advertising and public relations and serve as the school's spokesperson when so designated by the Head of School.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Develop a communications plan and create internal processes and guidelines necessary to ensure a consistently high standard of performance across the institution. Promote a culture that values compelling content, innovation, effective use of technology, and exceptional quality.
Steward the HPA brand through a revitalized style guide and support employees in their adherence to those guidelines.
Partner with colleagues across departments to ensure clarity and consistency in all communications.
Develop and implement innovative strategies in order to demonstrate the value of an HPA education and drive HPA toward increased engagement among all internal and external constituencies.
Collaborate with stakeholders — including the head of school, trustees, and colleagues in Admissions, Advancement, and the three school divisions — in defining and supporting communications goals and objectives.
Within the cultural context of Hawai'i and our diverse, multinational 'ohana, develop strategies for successfully targeting a range of constituencies, including prospective students and their parents, educational consultants, students, faculty, staff, administrators, parents, alumni, the media, and the community at large.
In collaboration with Admissions, create content for Hubspot, the Admission communication CRM.
In collaboration with Advancement, design strategies and implement concrete plans to engage alumni, parents, and friends and to inspire increased, consistent giving.
Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to the alumni magazine, e-newsletters, fundraising appeals, Admission materials, annual report, website, and social media platforms.
As a member of the Risk Management Team, review, revise, and update the school’s crisis communication plan and communication tools. Serve as school spokesperson in times of crisis
Oversee and manage the departmental budget.
Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach while monitoring development goals and areas of accountability. Ensure on-brand results from staff, freelance writers and designers, print vendors, and other contractors.
Engage actively in professional development in order to remain current in best practices related to independent school communications. Bring new ideas and strategies into the work of the senior administrative team and departments.

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field required.
Minimum 5-10 years of accomplished management-level experience with demonstrated expertise in strategic brand thinking and effective message management across multiple communication channels.
Exceptional writing, editing, and speaking skills with meticulous attention to detail, creativity, quality, and timeliness.
Demonstrated fluency with digital media and social platforms for marketing and communication purposes including web analytics, content development for social media and online advertising.
Demonstrated success in bringing regular, positive media and/or constituency attention to an organization.
Demonstrated success in supervising and managing a staff.
Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor, and adhere to schedules and budgets
A strong track record of managing multiple concurrent initiatives with competing deadlines.

Hawai`i Preparatory Academy, founded in 1949, is an independent coeducational school providing a full range of opportunities for students from kindergarten through grade 12. Our boarding program admits students in grades 9 through 12.
