The West Health Institute (WHI) is recruiting for a Principal Investigator (PI), Oral Health who will provide leadership in the implementation and dissemination of disruptive innovations designed to support our oral health program. The PI will work with the WHI and WHPC teams to further West Health’s mission to create new, more cost-effective ways of delivering high-quality oral health services. In 2016, we opened doors to the Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center, a one of a kind senior dental center that takes an integrated approach to addressing the dental, medical and social needs of low-income seniors in downtown San Diego. West Health is actively engaged with this center to study how this integrated approach impacts overall healthcare outcomes and the feasibility of adoption in practices throughout the country. Through a combination of applied medical research and policy initiatives, collaborations, education and advocacy, West Health is committed to supporting and creating oral healthcare delivery models that improve care and access while reducing costs for our fast-growing, diverse population of seniors.
The PI position is based in La Jolla, CA reporting to the Chief Medical Officer and EVP Clinical Research and is responsible for the development and execution of oral health research activities for the Institute. The successful candidate will apply research expertise in the development of research protocols, obtaining IRB and meeting other regulatory requirements, leading a cross-functional research team to ensure research timeliness are protocols are executed on time and within budget. The Principal Investigator will support and develop manuscripts, whitepapers, and engage with stakeholders to catalyze adoption of new models of oral health delivery that advance our successful aging mission.
The ideal candidate will possess strong public health, health policy and research skills. The candidate must have a track record of effectively forging partnerships between various stakeholders, including academic partners, medical centers, community based senior organizations, government agencies, payers, and patient advocates to drive the process of unmet need identification, meaningful innovation, and implementation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
Research, analyze, and translate strategies to encourage provision and use of cost effective oral health services for seniors.
Identification of strategies to promote the integration of evidence into policy and program decisions.
Appropriate adaptation of interventions according to senior population needs.
Identification of approaches to scale-up effective interventions.
Establish an impact evaluation for population based intervention.
Demonstrate collegial, collaborative, and diplomatic interpersonal style with ability to implement inclusive approaches to foster consensus and engagement across diverse stakeholders and constituents.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a multi-disciplinary stakeholder group.
Drive publication of results in peer reviewed journals, and more importantly, drive adoption of impactful solutions by a diverse set of healthcare industry stakeholder.
Ph.D or similar degree in a relevant field is preferred (e.g. clinical research, health services research, clinical epidemiology, public health, health policy, health economics, outcomes research).
3+ years of experience managing professional staff, projects, and collaborative relationships.
Experience and expertise in development and evaluation of research programs for oral health care is a plus.
Must possess strong analytic and technical skills.
Strong written and verbal communication, time management, presentation and organizational skills.
Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, ability to build research partnerships and to establish rapport and credibility at all levels.
Ability to establish and maintain relationships with diverse organizations, agencies, and persons
Knowledge of research operations management, including budgeting, project management, broad knowledge of management principles and techniques.
Highly self-motivated individuals with high energy, positive and professional approach, a “can-do” attitude, and attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
