Iowa State University is seeking applications for an Admissions Early Outreach Counselor. The Admissions Early Outreach Counselor assists with planning and implementing programs (summer camps, group visits, conferences, mentoring programs, workshops, etc.) for pre-college aged Iowa multicultural, first generation or low income, as well as, talented and gifted students in grades 3-12 from across the nation. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Admissions, Early Outreach.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide programming in Central Iowa and on campus to attract, recruit and prepare prospective students for recruitment at Iowa State, which is done by creating relationships with Iowa school guidance counselors and teachers; collaborating with college representatives on campus; aiding in the logistics of on-campus programs, including supply and volunteer coordination; and following a communication and marketing plan. When not representing Iowa State to Early Outreach students, the Admissions Early Outreach Counselor’s responsibilities will include assisting with, and conducting, daily enrollment presentations; and assisting with Early Outreach activities, including prospective student engagement. The individual in this position will be required to live in the residence halls during the Office of Precollegiate Programs for Talented and Gifted’s (OPPTAG) three week residential summer camps.
The successful candidate will bring creativity, high energy, enthusiasm and a strong customer service focus; demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking or presentation skills; and have PC computer skills, especially with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The duties of this position require the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds; a willingness to travel extensively and to work early mornings, late evenings and weekends; the ability to work as a team member in a fast-paced, changing workplace; and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of individuals on and off campus.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
Experience working in a student services area (admissions, dean of students, enrollment services, financial aid, housing, registrar, or TRIO) or youth programming, such as 4H, Boys & Girls clubs, etc.
Experience with long term detail oriented program planning.
Experience working with adolescents and providing appropriate programming.
Experience conducting presentations in a professional setting.
Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish.
Vacation time during May through July will be limited as this is peak time for the office.
The individual in this position will be required to live in the residence halls during OPPTAG’s three week residential summer camps.
