Director, Examination Development, CFA Program, Levels II & III
Job Description Summary:
The Director, Examination Development, CFA Program, Levels II & III is responsible for the development of exam content for the globally-administered CFA Levels II & III exams at CFA Institute. This position delivers complete examinations comprised of questions that are valid and reliable tests of whether candidates have adequately mastered the knowledge, skills and abilities targeted by assigned curriculum readings. The Director focuses on managing the relationships and overseeing the work of CFA exam team members (external question writing consultants) and internal and external reviewers. The position will work with administrative staff in Exam Development to manage the operations and support needed for remote item development and for the in-person meetings and publish and deliver the exams to Exam Administration and Security. The Director will work within a larger team (25-30) responsible for exam development and related activities supporting all credentialing exams sponsored by CFA Institute.
The position is headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA and reports to the Director, Examination Development.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Organize and manage the writing, reviewing, assembling and delivering of CFA Levels II and III item set and essay examinations:
Design, schedule, and implement processes supporting the development of the examinations
Plan and direct the structure and content of exams (design exam blueprints)
Review and edit large groups of exam questions and answers
Write exam questions and related documentation as needed
Accountable for final exam forms delivered to Exam Administration and Security for each scheduled administration
Develop and maintain expert knowledge of CFA curriculum materials
Develop and maintain a working knowledge of psychometric concepts, principles and measures
Assist other teams within Exam Development as a subject matter expert reviewer
Maintain past exam content and performance data
2. Shared accountability for ensuring administrative requirements of the team are met:
Determine people and budget resources required to meet assigned objectives
Direct and guide staff in organizing development activities, including writing assignments, scheduling meetings and review deadlines, building exam forms and related projects and initiatives
Lead or support process improvement projects, including software improvement projects, exam item and form innovations, item banking and alternative exam delivery methods
Collaborate with Program Management, Curriculum Development, Examination Administration & Security staff, and staff in other divisions on various policy, support and candidate communication matters
3. Shared management of CFA Exam Writing Teams and Content Reviewers:
Design and manage quality control and review processes for exam content
Recruit and train Exam Team members and topic area expert reviewers
Direct activities of internal and external exam reviewers
Evaluate writing processes and recommend steps to improve quality and efficiency
Collaborate with other teams within Exam Development to resolve common issues and share ideas for improvement
4. Post-exam activities:
Review and analyze psychometric performance, address candidate comments and determine any appropriate adjustments to grading keys
Collaborate with psychometric consultants to review and analyze exam and standard setting results
5. Support Director and Head, Exam Development and other CFA Institute leaders on strategic and external relationship initiatives:
Share ideas and recommend improvements in the CFA Program
Liaise with external groups and committees of CFA Institute
Foster and maintain strong relationships with societies, candidates, employers, prep courses and investment industry groups; speak at their events
Conduct and participate in research projects on best practices in testing
Collaborate with organizations in the credentialing and testing industry to raise the profile of CFA Institute; seek opportunities to present
CFA Charter required
Minimum 10 years of experience as an investment professional or as an educator at the university level, with demonstrable achievements and advancements
Bachelor’s degree, preferably with an emphasis on investments; Master’s degree desirable
Experience in project management, with skills necessary to determine and manage project needs to ensure successful and timely delivery
Testing or credentialing experience a plus
Fluency in English required; knowledge of additional languages useful

Experience as a CFA Institute volunteer in exam development or another CFA program role desirable

Energy to put in the hours of concentrated work necessary to achieve goals while maintaining a positive attitude
Collaborating with a global team of volunteers and consultants requires work on some evenings and weekends
Domestic and global travel may be required; approximately 15%-20% percent of the time
