La Jolla Country Day School seeks enthusiastic individuals qualified to join our Athletic department as Physical Education teachers for the 2019-2020 academic year. PE faculty are also expected to serve as coaches for Upper and Middle School athletic teams throughout the year.
Essential duties will include:
Daily group instruction that promotes physical activity and mastery of locomotor skills;
Ongoing communication and conference with parents;
Advising and mentoring groups of students;
Conferencing with students and colleagues as required;
Active participation in the curricular improvement of the department; and
Serving as head coach for multiple teams at the Upper and Middle School levels over the course of the academic year.
Provides instruction in varying group sizes and individually in the specified subject matter.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials as part of planned learning experiences to motivate pupils.
Evaluates pupil academic and social growth, keeps accurate records, prepares progress reports and communicates with parents on individual pupil progress.
Creates, with assistance from pupils, a functional and attractive environment for learning through a variety of games, challenges, and activities, and assumes responsibility for proper care and use of equipment.
Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the school and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
Completes all reports as required, including student evaluation, orders, program evaluation and lesson plans.
Interprets the educational program to parents and other community members through personal conferences, meetings and various media.
Attends faculty meetings, in-service meetings, team meetings, grade level meetings or department meetings as required.
Administers and scores such tests as may be required by the school.
Performs basic attendance accounting as required.
Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day as required.
Shares in sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees.
Performs other duties of an adjunct nature, which are necessary to smooth operation of the school as needed.
Maintains active participation in the work of the department on curriculum development, vision and pedagogy.
The candidate must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree. Prior teaching and coaching experience is expected; preference will be given to candidates with experience at independent schools.
Familiarity with computers and expertise in the use of technology to enhance instruction is also preferred. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point), and be able to learn to use other applications and hardware (Google Drive, Apple TV, On Record, Blackboard, etc.).

All school personnel must successfully complete a fingerprint background check through Live Scan and provide current tuberculosis clearance.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong desire for, and successful experience in, coaching and leading volleyball, field hockey, and/or lacrosse programs.
