La Jolla Country Day School is seeking an experienced college counselor to join our team as a Co-Director of College Counseling. The college counseling team coordinates the School’s efforts in guiding students and their families through every facet of the college search process. This individual educates students and their families on the college admission process from selection and application through admission and financial assistance. The Co-Director collaborates with other members of the college counseling team, the student, their teachers, and their families in selecting the right college fit, academically and socially.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Counsels and guides students and parents towards common goals on college selection and admission by:
Establishing standards of student behavior needed to achieve a successful college admission process
Developing schedules to help the student select, apply, and be admitted to colleges and universities
Evaluating the student’s academic and social growth, making recommendations to highlight the student’s candidacy in the college application process
Managing students’ and families’ expectations throughout the college process
Providing course and activity recommendations to students
Ensures deadlines are met in regard to letters of recommendation and other submission materials
Proctors standardized tests, as may be required by the school, and reviews test results
Hosts college visits to campus and establishes strong relationships with college representatives and admissions officers
Represents the School at various events, speaking to current and prospective students and families about the services the college counseling team provides
Engages in professional associations such as NACAC and WACAC
The candidate must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree.
Significant experience counseling and supporting students through the college selection, application, admission, and financial aid process
Two or more years of experience as a college counselor or college admissions officer
Excellent communication skills, supportive attitude, and passion for guiding and advising college bound students
The Co-Director of College Counseling will have a strong commitment to independent school life and experience as a college counselor or college admissions officer. The Counselor can expect a fast paced, dynamic work environment and involvement in all aspects of school life including chaperoning duties, serving as a faculty advisor, and taking on various other responsibilities.
