The Assistant Director of Residence Life is responsible for assisting the Director of Residence Life with all elements of the Residence Life department and its staff. The Residence Life program is complementary to the academic curriculum and serves as our boarding students’ home away from home. Students living in residence develop bonds that last far beyond Hockaday based on shared experiences in the classroom, the dining hall, their living rooms and day-to-day life. Residence Life strives to teach residence students interpersonal and relationship skills, and how to effectively live together in community. The Assistant Director will select, train, supervise, and evaluate student prefect staff and provide leadership for two residence halls. Provide services directly to students, such as personal and disciplinary counseling, and social/educational events, activities, and programming. Maintain a balance between administrative workload and student interactions. Participate in the overall planning and management of the residence program. The Assistant Director of Residence Life reports to the Director of Residence Life.
Essential Functions: •Assist in the selection, training, supervising, and evaluation of the Senior Prefects
•Co-supervise the four to six live-in Residence Life staff (Dorm Parents) and four to six drivers.
•Manage the residential weekend staff, to include scheduling and training.
•Assist the Director of Residence with all staff training
•Coordinate staff professional development
•Supervise and mentor Student House Council
•Oversee transportation and activities logistics including the student holiday travel program
•Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. Work in partnership with Director of Inclusion and Community on educational programming and student support efforts
•Develop a knowledge of School and community resources to ensure timely and efficient referrals when appropriate
•Establish and maintain communication with residence students through individual outreach and community meetings? serve as a mediator/facilitator when necessary to provide resolutions for interpersonal conflicts between students.
•Serve as Residence Life liaison to Admission and Enrollment Department
•Serve as Residence Life liaison to Safety and Security Department
•Coordinate student health and wellness educational programming, in partnership with the Counseling Team and Director of Residence Life
•Develop and implement Residence Life curriculum in partnership with the Director of Residence Life and other School external constituents
•Serve as Administrator-on-Call within weekly duty cycle
•Maintain effective working relationships with the Health Center, Counseling Team, Department of Safety and Security, Facilities Department, Dining Services, and the Upper and Middle School leadership
•Serve as Director of Residence Life in Director’s absence
•Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: •Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or a related field •At least three years of boarding/residence life experience •Experience with students, families, and faculty •Demonstrated experience of working collaboratively and commitment to serving as a productive team member and colleague •Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment, demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities are required. •A high degree of emotional intelligence •Professionalism, excellent judgement, and the energy and commitment to lead a successful Residence Life program within the context of the greater Hockaday School community. •A passion for independent school education. •Proficiency with various uses of technology •Ability to work flexible hours, including weeknights and weekends •Serve as a member of rotating Administer-on-call coverage system Application Requirements: Qualified candidates should complete an online application for employment and attach a cover letter and résumé.
