CIEE (The Council on International Educational Exchange), a non-governmental organization that is the world leader in international study abroad and exchange programs, seeks an energetic, visionary leader to serve as its new Executive Vice President for Study Abroad.
The Executive Vice President (EVP) will report to the President and Chief Executive Officer. She or he will lead and direct our study abroad and internships programs for college students from the US seeking cultural exchanges around the world.

CIEE advances its mission through a worldwide network of consortium members, international partners, and sites. Headquartered in Portland, Maine, and with administrative offices in Boston, CIEE employs over 800 staff and operates 65 sites in more than 40 countries.
The EVP will collaborate with the President to shape the strategic direction for a global matrix of international study abroad programs that overall constitute two-thirds of CIEE’s annual revenues. She or he will be responsible for the overall operations of the 65 global sites; ensuring high quality programing in every location, developing and implementing annual budgets; managing teams in each program area; meeting sales and enrollment targets; developing exemplary relationships with academic consortium members and key user groups, and ensuring that CIEE is the industry's leader in student safety.
To strengthen current activities and identify future opportunities for study abroad, the EVP will collaborate and consult with colleagues, external partners, stakeholders, and the Academic Consortium Board.

ROLE OF THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
The Executive Vice President will manage this complex portfolio of activities, working with senior leadership and staff to develop comprehensive plans that identifies specific objectives and outcomes consistent with CIEE's strategic priorities. A member of the senior executive team of CIEE, the EVP reports to the President and CEO. Direct reports to the EVP include the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Global Operations, and the Vice President for Health, Safety and Security.
The EVP's role in business development, program assessment, and fiscal management will be critical. She or he must take active and equal interest in the operations, content, and financial health of the division's programs. The EVP will work with staff to identify participant needs and interests as well as consortium member needs; look for new opportunities for service and growth; and set and meet sales and enrollment targets.
Finally, the EVP will provide leadership and support to the team of professionals in this division. The broad array of programs found in this division places significant demands on the EVP's focus and attention. Additionally, the rapid expansion of programs and growth in summer enrollments have placed a strain on some aspects of operations and many divisions need attention and support as they face the challenge of year-round operations and staggered program start and end dates. The EVP must understand the practical and business ramifications of organizational change and ensure that CIEE continues to maintain its stellar reputation in the industry.
KEY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
The Executive Vice President's overarching challenge is to provide strategic vision, business and financial sophistication, and effective direction to the division against the backdrop of an increasingly competitive environment, rapidly shifting demands from students, and within the higher education industry which can be slow to change. The EVP’s overarching opportunity is found in the dynamic nature of international education and the historically important role CIEE has played in this arena. In this context, the new EVP will be empowered to:
Provide inspirational leadership and mentorship to an international team of professionals
The EVP will galvanize and energize the unit around a shared vision for the future of international and cultural exchange. The EVP will work with the leadership and staff of the division to ensure that their angle of vision goes beyond the complex operational and programmatic requirements of study abroad, to the world of possibilities and ideas for further development. The division must simultaneously attend to myriad details, requirements, and activities while scanning the landscape and noting trends that will translate into promising new lines of activity. The professionals in this division are well-positioned to capture the needs and interests of those with whom they are in contact; the EVP will work with the staff across the division to leverage this knowledge for the benefit of CIEE's market share and business. The EVP will also advocate for resources--including technology solutions--to further the activity of the division.
Sustain educational excellence and widen CIEE’s lead in international education, while expanding access to international experiences
The hallmark of CIEE is the quality, rigor, and educational excellence of its international experiences. As the marketplace for international education transitions from semester or year-long immersion programs only for students with strong language skills to international experiences for a more diverse range of students through innovative programs that fall outside of the traditional model, sustaining the quality and excellence of CIEE’s programmatic offerings is essential. The EVP must work closely with the senior study team and the Academic Consortium Board to ensure that as the mix of programs and adaptability of offerings expands, that quality, consistency, and safety remain the signature of a CIEE experience.
Identify and pursue promising new programs and rigorously evaluate existing programs
The EVP must ensure that new and existing programs provide an international experience that is a vibrant, rigorous, transformative, safe, and accessible to as many students as possible. With over 200 programs in place, the next EVP must carefully evaluate the array of programs, and be both strategic and opportunistic in pursuing new opportunities.
This will require an engaged, enthusiastic, and productive relationship with members of the Academic Consortium Board. The insights, concerns, and enthusiasm of the ACB helps to shape CIEE’s programs. Cultivating a close partnership with the ACB will be essential.
Cultivate and sustain connections with key constituents
The work of CIEE relies on close partnerships with host institutions, as well as US colleges and universities. At the core of CIEE is a diverse and active group of more than 350 leading public and private colleges and universities. With more than 80% of CIEE’s study abroad participants drawn from consortium member institutions, cultivating and sustaining relationships with member institutions is critical. Communicating the value, richness, and rigor of CIEE programs, while learning from members about their needs, will ensure that interested students are connected with CIEE’s international experiences. Additionally, ensuring that CIEE and host institutions are collaborative partners on student experiences, educational content, and facilities is essential.

Education and experience: An advanced degree, ideally a PhD or MBA; a successful record of senior leadership in complex organizations, ideally with international programs and services; aptitude for understanding the higher education landscape and the needs of consortium member institutions as well as partner institutions around the world; strong financial acumen; experience with compliance, crisis management, student safety, and risk management.
