Worldreader is searching for a dynamic and engaging Director of Development to strengthen, expand, and refine Worldreader's fundraising activities. The Director manages a global team of seven development professionals (six in the US, and one in the UK), and in collaboration with other global leaders, models and supports effective, on-going cross-departmental partnerships that address the intersections of fundraising, board governance, program, and infrastructure. The Development department is part of the Advancement Team lead by the Chief Advancement Officer, which also including Marketing & Communications, and Strategic Partnerships.
Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, Worldreader's Director of Development will bring a creative and entrepreneurial approach to creating a revenue-driven culture. S/he will partner with the senior leadership and board members in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high-capacity institutional and major donors to meet ambitious fundraising goals. The Director of Development must be able to think strategically and practically to develop and implement a comprehensive and results-oriented development plan that includes traditional and innovative fundraising strategies. Key components of the plan should include goals, strategies, and timetables to insure the success of all streams of fundraising including foundation, corporate, government and major gifts.
This position is preferably based in Worldreader's San Francisco, CA office or in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
Strategy & Execution
Develop and implement a short- and long-term advancement plan to meet development goals and objectives, including the successful execution of the Reading for Opportunity Campaign.
Working with senior members of the Development team, design and implement strategies for engaging with Worldreader's current / prospective donors and partners (Foundation, Corporate, Government, Multi-Lateral, Individuals).
Build, strengthen and expand Worldreader's development operations capabilities. Responsible for managing all aspects of development operations, including but not limited to prospect research, proposal development, pipeline management, grants management, reporting, donor stewardship, fundraising systems, and special events.
Provide strong leadership, mentorship and coaching to a high performing development team to achieve ambitious fundraising targets. Provide regular performance reviews, appropriate recognition, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
Work collaboratively and creatively with the Director of Communications to appropriately position development opportunities and integrate messages in publications, grant submissions, reports and collateral for cultivating and stewarding donors.
Work collaboratively with senior Impact Team members, to develop innovative and high quality funding proposals.
Prepare department operating budget and expense forecasts for fundraising activities, ensuring goals are met on time and within budget.
Help maintain the flow of information within the Advancement Team and across Worldreader's leadership and staff.
Cultivation, Solicitation, Stewardship
Develop cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans customized for each prospective donor.
Manage prospect research and cultivation initiatives with an emphasis on pursuing strategies to secure or increase giving from donors in all streams (institutional, individual). This includes providing a structure and process for development staff and members of the Board of Directors.
Lead all grants applications processes, managing the full life cycle of funding (application, reporting, relationship management, grants management).
Work with senior staff to establish an organization-wide shared vision and strategy for corporate engagement, to include fundraising, in-kind support, volunteer and other partner engagement opportunities.
Develop strategies for existing donors to effectively move them through a cycle of giving.
Effectively manage donor relationships, engaging with donors directly and/or in cooperation with the CAO and other senior staff.
Strategically leverage the US and regional boards, and current donors, in prospect identification, visits, and solicitations, as appropriate.
Successfully align donor interests with Worldreader's strategy and initiatives and educate donors on the power of technology to support reading and education.
Represent Worldreader in conferences and in meetings with current or prospective partners
As the incoming Director of Development, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
Demonstrates servant-leadership, embodies the Worldreader mission, and exemplifies a collaborative, decisive, motivating and engaging communications style.
Proven track record of fundraising success by securing major gifts and/or large institutional grants, successfully managing campaigns, and engaging a community of motivated supporters; experience fundraising in a global context would be ideal.
Strong track record of effective operational leadership in a fundraising, sales, or business development capacity, with the ability to set and meet ambitious team goals while providing appropriate support and coaching for success.
Exceptional writing skills is a must. Proven track record in leading and developing high impact grant proposals, and related processes, which lead the securing of multi-million-dollar awards.
Successful track record in building and managing relationships with senior staff members from corporate foundations, private foundations, government and international development organizations.
Experience with successfully building, managing relationships with, and soliciting funding from high net worth individuals.
Demonstrated track record of successfully working cross-functionally with boards, program and communications staff, for effective fundraising.
Proven success soliciting and securing six and seven-figure gifts.
Experience with Salesforce or other donor management systems.
Aptitude and appetite for working in fast-paced, high-growth organizations.
Experience with digital fundraising strategies a big plus.
Passion for and knowledge of technology and data for social good a big plus.
Experience in a leadership role in a similar non-profit setting a plus.
Advanced proficiency in English, written and oral, is required.
Legal authorization to work in the United States and ability to travel nationally and internationally.
