The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications and nominations for a Tenured-Track position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture (PSLA).

The Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture includes expertise in agronomy, crop science, agroecology, urban ecology, conservation biology, and landscape architecture with an overall goal to secure equitable food, water and energy resources for all people. Faculty are involved in solving some of the most pressing challenges impacting Maryland and beyond, including resilience of crop production and natural ecosystems to climate change, crop improvement, nitrogen utilization, small grain and horticultural food crop safety, food security, plant pathogen interactions, and development and physiology of plants. PSLA offers academic programs in Plant Biology, Landscape Architecture, Agronomy, Environmental Horticulture, Turf science, Urban Forestry and Agricultural Education. The department is also home to a robust graduate program in Plant Sciences and the Masters of Landscape Architecture. The department has a total state budget of nearly $4.5M and over $2.2M in annual extramural funding. The department is located centrally on campus in the Plant Sciences Building and in the University of Maryland Research Greenhouse Complex, that houses the core of the University of Maryland Research Plant Growth Facilities. The department also participates statewide in Extension programming. The campus location inside the capital beltway offers unique opportunities to collaborate with federal agencies and laboratories including USDA, NASA-Goddard, NIH, NSF, FDA, EPA, NPS, and APHIS. Ensures effective representation and communication between the department faculty, staff, students, dean and other administrative officers of the University: Administers state, national, and international programs of the department, directs human, physical, and financial resources, assigns responsibilities to faculty and staff, and encourages the proactive development of strategic programs. Helps establish and implement a shared vision within the departmental community and furthers the efforts to enhance diversity and inclusion within the department and through access to departmental programs. The chair collaborates with senior university administrators, deans, associate and assistant deans, other UMD chairs, and Research and Education Center directors, as well as administrators of state and federal agencies in providing leadership for delivering integrated programs to meet the needs of students, extension clientele, research sponsors, and other stakeholders. The chair works with University of Maryland Extension (UME) to deliver educational programs throughout the State of Maryland.
Required: The successful candidate must have a PhD in plant science, horticulture, agronomy, landscape architecture or a closely related discipline, be internationally recognized for accomplishments in research, instruction, and/or Extension, and be qualified to be tenured at the rank of professor at UMD. Additionally, the candidate must have significant administrative/managerial experience, possess outstanding communication skills, have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, administration, industry, and other clientele, demonstrated ability in attracting extramural funding, a deep understanding of the fields of plant science, agronomy, horticulture, and landscape architecture, and a strong desire to contribute to the land-grant mission.
Demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among internal and external research and academic partners in support of the department’s mission as a land-grant institution.
Leadership style that seeks consensus and inclusion in support of the shared governance model as designed and outlined by the department, college, and university.
Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a large, multi-faceted department or organization housed at several locations.
Experience in promoting and marketing teaching, research, and/or Extension to diverse national and international communities.
Demonstrated success in obtaining external funding opportunities in support of research, teaching, and/or Extension activities.
