The overall purpose of this position is to identify signals both inside and outside of IEEE that could indicate threats to continued success or opportunities to grow the organization’s business and increase market share. This is a high-profile position with significant exposure to highly educated audiences, including senior volunteer leadership at the Board of Directors and committee levels, as well as staff leadership at the senior executive and staff director levels. The incumbent is a proven leader with the ability to articulate how to execute long-term strategy, innovation, and growth to staff and volunteer committees and boards. He/she facilitates planning sessions and builds strategies that lead to change activities at all levels of the organization.
The role will be accountable for long-term strategy, innovation, growth, and competitiveness to pursue the mission and vision of IEEE while meeting the needs of stakeholders. His/her activities include necessary strategic research, competitive intelligence, and environmental scanning to support strategic information needs; supporting committees that develop and oversee the strategic planning and alignment of the organization, as well as new initiatives; and to document, disseminate, and communicate strategy and new initiatives programs to key constituencies and audiences (including volunteers, staff, and the general public).
The position reports to the Senior Director, Corporate Activities and functions as a high-level individual contributor. Though this position does not manage staff, it has a strong influence on the work of others and is expected to interact with top management and senior volunteer leaders.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Directs, develops, and implements IEEE strategic research, competitive intelligence, and environmental scanning plans, and programs (including primary and secondary research).
Provides internal organizational units with data, intelligence, and guidance that contributes to stronger revenue streams and broadened portfolios of products and services.
Drives development of IEEE’s strategic thinking and planning efforts for senior volunteer leadership at the Board of Directors and committee levels as well as staff leadership at the senior executive and staff director levels.
Works with staff executives and Board of Directors to identify and frame major strategic issues as well as develop options for long- and short-term business strategies.
Partners with senior leadership to define strategic planning process, including planning framework, work steps, timelines, and major deliverables.
Monitors the implementation of the strategic plan and related initiatives to support the organizational vision.
Champions the New Initiatives Program within the organization by interacting with staff and volunteers and implement the New Initiatives process to identify and develop new programs, products, and services that address strategic priorities.
Collaborates with the research department to collect and synthesize data on the competitive landscape, market trends, and environmental scans.
Supports strategy-related communication, learning, and change at all levels of the business.
Provides staff leadership and support for the committees that develop and oversee the strategic planning and alignment of the organization, as well as and new initiatives.
Provides business assessments of new initiative proposals for project portfolio and by offering business analysis assistance to proposers including help with business models, transition plans into IEEE operations, market analysis, and project management guidance.
Supports and conducts due diligence and assessments of new initiative proposals.
Investigates new opportunities including competitive landscape, business/pricing model, market data collection, and business planning for new initiative proposals Collaborates with professional staff, primarily Marketing, Sales, & Design department, to understand product and service portfolio, pricing strategy, and impact of the proposed project on existing portfolio.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Social Science, Statistics, Research, or business field is required; Advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 10 years professional experience in market research, strategic planning, competitive intelligence, or related fields.
Experience leading organizations through strategic discussions and getting positive results.
Demonstrated experience with exceptional program management skills.

Valid travel credentials in the event there is international travel.
