The Marin School, an independent college-preparatory high school in San Rafael, California, seeks a College Placement Counselor. This position is part-time; however, it could be combined with another position to make it full-time, depending upon the skills of the applicant.
The role of College Counselor is a key role at The Marin School. Our graduates enroll in a range of colleges from community colleges to very selective colleges. We emphasize the right fit.
Advise students and their parents in grades 9-12, individually and in groups, regarding college selection, application and admission procedures, with a focus on fit.
Plan and execute all college counseling events including an August Jumpstart program, a senior Fall Trips “staycation”, and family information nights.
Oversee the standardized testing calendar for students including scheduling test dates, registering students, arranging for special "prep sessions", administering the tests, and providing pre and post-test counseling.
Maintain accurate permanent records of students' testing, academic work and other forms (such as alternative PE credit forms). Produce and distribute transcripts as needed.
Oversee the timely completion of faculty recommendations for students applying to college.
Develop reports for the Head of School and Board of Trustees regarding student progress and college placement statistics.
Create and distribute a regular college counseling newsletter as a communication tool for parents and students.
Maintain an attractive, informative and up-to-date college counseling center.
Oversee visits to colleges and visits from college representatives.
Establish and maintain connections with college representatives to advocate for applicants.
Create partnership with local community colleges.
Advise students on course selection and the consequences of those choices in the college selection process.
Maintain and update college counseling data on website.
Review, adjust, and improve the college counseling program each year.
Represent the school at relevant conferences and workshops.
Represent the school at various events, such as the New Student/Parent Orientation, admissions open houses, parent coffees and college fairs.
Write detailed letters of recommendation for seniors.
Coordinate with the English Department to offer a college essay and application workshop.
Attend the weekly meetings of Student Services Group.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Head of School and/or the Head of School.
Maintain strong, professional relationships with colleagues in an environment where listening, critical thought, respectful debate, and compromise are welcomed and essential.
Participate in all faculty and staff meetings.
Supervise and/or participate in non-academic activities such as lunch supervision, chaperoning for dances and other activities, overnight trips, and service days.
Bachelor's degree required. College admissions post-graduate courses and/or Master’s degree a plus.
Five years of teaching and/or administrative experience in an independent school environment, or five years of college admissions experience.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Familiarity with Naviance.
Understanding of Cal State and UC system requirements.
Knowledge of a range of college options, including those with strong academic support for students with learning differences.
A strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, flexibility, ease and experience with computers, and a willingness to coordinate efforts with others.
Enthusiasm for teaching adolescents and working with parents of adolescents.
Experience in a college admission office would be a plus, though not a requirement.
Ability to learn how to use a computerized student management system (currently using ThinkWave) to produce transcripts.
Calculate GPA and awards.
Must have good attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines.

An ability to communicate respectfully, proactively, and honestly both orally and in writing with parents, colleagues, and administrators regarding curriculum and students.
