The Division of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine invites highly qualified and motivated mid-career candidates at the Associate/Full Professor level to join the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) for the position of Director of Proton Physics.
The successful candidate will have substantial proton therapy experience and will lead clinical and research initiatives at the MPTC. The Director will work closely with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists to support our clinical proton therapy program, as well as lead clinical innovations and implement new technologies. In addition, a strong record of past and current extramural funding in proton therapy research is highly desired. Research areas of interest include FLASH therapy, MRI-guided proton therapy, multi-spectral image-guidance, small-animal image-guided proton therapy, novel beam delivery techniques, and applications of artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques in proton therapy.
Facility and Equipment
The MPTC is equipped with a Varian ProBeam system with four gantry rooms, each equipped with a cone-beam CT, and a fixed beam room. The center has a dual energy CT scanner, a Siemens 1.5 T MRI scanner, and a microwave-based deep hyperthermia unit. The first patient was treated in February of 2016, and since then more than 1,500 patients have been treated. Other in-room technologies include VisionRT surface photogrammetry system and breath-hold gating. This state-of-the-art facility is currently staffed with 8 medical physics faculty, 3 physics assistants, and 12 dosimetrists.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland provides a full range of clinical services at the University of Maryland Medical Center and its 5 well-integrated community programs, including the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. All practice sites are connected via a telemedicine network facilitating frequent interactions between facilities. The Department of Radiation Oncology’s clinical program consists of 23 physicians inclusive of fellows and physician scientists. The main academic patient care facility is located at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in downtown Baltimore, within the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. The MPTC is located in the University of Maryland’s BioPark and is within easy walking distance to the University’s Medical Center. The department’s clinical program includes 11 linear accelerators, 5 multi-slice large bore CT simulators with 4D capabilities, 2 HDR units, a Gamma Knife; and active programs in conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, IGRT, Hyperthermia Therapy, Brachytherapy and SRS/SBRT. In addition, there are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MRI scanners.
The Medical Physics Division is currently comprised of 25 faculty physicists, 24 dosimetrists, 3 physics residents, 9 post-doctoral fellows and graduate students, 4 system administrators, and 2 application programmers. Basic research is organized through an extremely well-funded Division of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS), which has 16 dedicated research faculty members with grant-funded programs in aspects of cellular responses to DNA damage and molecular biology, as well as preclinical in vivo models of radiation effects on normal tissue. The Division of Medical Physics has dedicated as research space as well as shared research space with DTRS. Resources include overall office and lab space of 19,197 sq. ft. inclusive of 1,000 sq. ft. machine shop, a high-performance computing environment, a small animal image-guided radiotherapy system (SARRP) and several research treatment planning stations.
The proton center is located in downtown Baltimore, close to the Inner Harbor waterfront, professional sports stadiums a myriad of museums, musical and arts venues. In addition, Washington DC with all its cultural, historic and entertainment options is only a short car ride or train ride away.
