The Computational Earth Science Group in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has a rewarding position for a postdoctoral research associate in the field of network and spatial optimization. The Computational Earth Science Group (EES-16) focuses on a broad array of energy, environmental, and national security challenges, including energy, environment, and national and global security. The successful candidate will work as part of a small team developing and applying network and spatial optimization techniques to CO 2 capture and storage (CCS) problems. The team is developing the SimCCS software, an economic-engineering framework for helping scientists, stakeholders and policy makers understand how CCS infrastructure could or should be deployed.

Salary ($74,000+)

Requirements:

Ph.D. degree in the last five years (or pending) in geography, computer science, engineering (civil, environmental, etc.) applied mathematics, management science, or earth science
Strong understanding of network and spatial optimization techniques and problems
Ability to code in a least one programming language such as Java (SimCCS is written in Java) Python, Fortran, and MATLAB
Willingness to support, develop, and lead peer-reviewed publications

Desired Skills:

Knowledge of network/spatial optimization heuristics
An interest in understanding energy- and infrastructure-related applications
Effective written and oral communication skills
Ability to work with a diverse and multidisciplinary team
Knowledge of one or more optimal solvers such as CPLEX, GUROBI, XPRESS or open-source solvers
Spatial data analysis techniques (e.g., GIS, geostatistics)
Ability to work in high-performance computing (HPC) environments
Working knowledge of CCS including CO 2 capture, transport and storage/sequestration
