Engages and directs other Instrument Technicians in the performance of delegated projects, procedures or tasks, involving the installation, testing, repair and maintenance of all types of electronic, computer-based, pneumatic or hydraulic equipment, associated with instrumentation and process control systems.
Develops and maintains a level of independent expertise involving state-of-the-art technologies associated with coal-fired power plants in instrumentation and process controls.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Tests or performs technical analysis and subsequently repairs all malfunctions or aberrations, that are encountered in the maintenance, operation or testing of instrumentation, computers and process control equipment, and to take the appropriate action to ensure continuity and reliability of the systems.
Performs installations and puts into service instrumentation and control systems equipment as assigned following acceptable ISA, NEC, ASTM or other applicable standards.
Delegates appropriate responsibility and makes task assignments to apprentice Instrument Technicians and instructs them in the procedures and practices of instrumentation and control systems technology and acceptable safe working practices under the general supervision of the I&C Supervisor.
Reviews the specifications of newly-acquired equipment and performs operational check-outs and verifications of quality and quantity in order to make recommendations concerning equipment acceptability.
Plans each work assignment in order to delegate various aspects of each project to qualified personnel, with provisions for guidance, as necessary, and training opportunities, where possible.
Makes sketches, takes notes, draws graphs and completes reports in order to maintain complete and accurate records within system files about the installation, testing, repair and maintenance of equipment. Reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions to the I&C Supervisor in a responsible and timely fashion.
Makes periodic inspections and ensures proper utilization, maintenance and security of assigned tools, equipment and work areas.
Reviews with and provides appropriate input to the Instrument Supervisor, any recommendations and practices, procedures, system requirements or improvements in order to facilitate maintenance schedules, short- or long- range plans, or any other efficiencies or cost improvements.
Provides the necessary on-the-job training and guidance of personnel of lesser classifications in order to upgrade their instrumentation techniques and to enhance the possibilities for greater responsibility and utilization of skills. Engages in personal development from outside sources in order to stay abreast of changing technologies.
Acts in an exemplary manner in order to maintain and promote safe working practices and procedures. Participates in scheduled safety meetings and safety training. Maintains a good working knowledge of OSHA regulations as they pertain to power plants. Maintains a good understanding and appreciation for all EPS guidelines covering water, air and ground pollution protection and prevention. Performs all appropriate work under the Plant Clearance Permit System.
Creates and maintains a professional work environment whereby other technicians are stimulated to higher levels of productivity.

High School Diploma, or its equivalent
2-year associate’s degree in electronic technology, computer technology or process control technology, or its equivalent in military training and service.
Six years of instrumentation and process control experience, including at least five years as a power plant Instrument and Control Technician (or its equivalent), LAN system experience to include personal computer hardware and software training and experience.
Proven leadership track in guidance of other employees.
Skills and Abilities:
Broad knowledge of installation, testing, maintenance and repair of all power plant instrumentation and control systems equipment, Novell based LAN systems, PC’s; understands the process control principals; and possesses planning, organizational and motivational skills.
