As a Designated School Official (DSO) authorized by the Department of Homeland Security, International Student Advisors interpret complex U.S. immigration laws, regulations, policies and procedures as applied to individual international students (current population of 6,000) at Indiana University. Exercise professional judgment to advise and counsel these students on all aspects of their stay in the United States and at IU, while also ensuring that Indiana University complies with federal monitoring and reporting requirements. Actively participate in the development, maintenance, and growth of staff expertise in the laws and regulations governing international students and in promulgating IU policies and procedures that ensure ongoing compliance. Plan, develop and conduct programming to educate international students and the IU community on the laws, regulations, policies, and procedures governing international students. Ensure that required information is reported to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in accordance with federal requirements and that required immigration documentation needed to maintain legal status is adjudicated accurately and efficiently. Serve as immigration expert to other IU departments and as liaison with state and local government agencies on issues related to international students.
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience working with complex federal immigration regulations.
Demonstrated working knowledge in immigration regulations programming, strong communication and multitasking skills, and high energy. Permanent resident or US Citizen to serve as a Designated School Official in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree. Three years of experience working with complex federal immigration regulations in an educational setting. Immigration advising experience of international students.
