Reporting to the Director of Principal Gifts, the Senior Director of Individual Giving serves as a member of the Development division’s senior leadership team and is responsible, with the team, for implementing the mission, strategies and goals of the Development division. S/he is responsible for developing and implementing high-level strategies to grow the Leadership Giving Program (gifts of $250,000 to $5,000,000). S/he also carries a portfolio of principal gift prospects and is an active member of the Development Principal Gift team.
Toward this effort, s/he manages a team, providing mentorship to help them build strong donor relationships and expand support. The Senior Director also collaborates broadly, both within the Development group and across the college.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Lead the individual giving teams in a concerted effort to maintain relationships with current donors while launching a systematic initiative to identify, cultivate, and solicit other individuals capable of making leadership/major/planned gifts. Utilize a suite of online tools to maximize ability of staff to broaden base of donors and to most effectively target their efforts.
Manage a small pool of prospects, including individuals with the capacity to make gifts at the level of $5M plus.
Develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty and senior administrative staff and ensure that development staff members do, as well.
Inspire staff to achieve aggressive individual and team goals and serve as a mentor to staff, including engaging in joint visits and modeling effective development practices. Focus on the professional development of individuals and teams.
Provide opportunities for staff to increase and enhance their skills so that they can function effectively in positions of increasing responsibility. Delegate effectively in order to utilize staff to their maximum potential.
Explore opportunities and invent ways to assure coordination, collaboration and integration of leadership giving, major giving, and planned giving efforts.
Encourage teamwork and the open flow of ideas, and contribute to the creation of a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment.
Provide leadership and strategic direction for prospect research activities; oversee planning and implementation of prospect management systems; promote collaboration, clear communication, and sharing of information among Development departments; design reports for metrics and analysis. Ensure pipeline of prospective donors for attention by development officers and financial support of the College
Strategic and Operational Leadership
Participate fully as a member of the Development senior management team in divisional planning and operations. Serve as a member of the senior management team of Development; participate in strategic planning; establish annual goals and priorities; represent Development on college-wide committees as requested.
Provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational management for the leadership giving, major giving, and planned giving fund-raising functions, as well as the prospect research function.
Fully integrate the individual giving functions. Develop innovative, successful ways to reach a greater level of efficiency and effectiveness, and implement these approaches in a collegial, effective manner.
Set the tone and expectations for performance and responsiveness both to external and internal constituents. Model collaborative leadership behavior, and develop leadership in others on the team.

A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
A minimum of ten to fifteen years of development experience, including management experience in a complex fund-raising operation, preferably in a higher education environment.
Skills and Abilities Required
The Senior Director of Individual Giving will be a proven leader with the experience, vision and energy to strengthen a successful comprehensive advancement program. The Senior Director must possess a proven track record of success as a leadership and principal gift fundraiser as well as a deep understanding of a broad range of advancement programs in academia. In addition, s/he will have proven competency in managing people and programs successfully. S/he will demonstrate integrity, outstanding communication skills, exceptional judgment and the ability to establish strong collegial relationships with other members of the senior management team. S/he will have strong analytical skills, an understanding of best practices nationally, and the ability to build and motivate teams to work towards ambitious goals.

Expertise in principal and leadership giving, planned giving, campaign planning, and execution.
