The Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) is searching for a President & Chief Executive Officer (President) due to the March 31, 2020 retirement of the current President after 22 years of service in that role. The MICPA, a not-for-profit organization, is a diversified, professional, member-driven association for certified public accountants and affiliated professionals. With 19,000 members distributed across public accounting, corporate finance, education, students and government, it is the leading statewide professional organization dedicated to promoting and enhancing the value of the CPA profession.
The MICPA generates over $8 million in annual revenue, primarily through membership dues, continuing professional education events and programs, peer review, and sponsorship opportunities.
Headquartered in a new office space in Troy, Michigan, the dedicated staff of the MICPA, led by the President & CEO, totals nearly 50 employees. As the accounting profession continues to evolve, the MICPA recognizes it is at a critical inflection point, calling for an experienced, passionate executive who can leverage the strengths of the Association, while acting as a “change agent” to develop and lead the implementation of innovative strategies to support the long-term viability and continued success of the MICPA and its members.
The President is responsible for the development and execution of the MICPA strategy, vision and direction, leading the day-to-day operations and management activities, and implementing policies and programs endorsed by the Board of Directors (Board) in a responsive and timely manner. Together, the President and Board ensure MICPA’s value to the members, the accomplishment of MICPA’s mission and vision, and the accountability of the MICPA to its diverse constituents.
The President is tasked with addressing the following strategic priorities:
Develop innovative strategies to grow overall dues-paying membership
Develop modern strategies for continuing professional education
Continuously enhance the value proposition of the MICPA by identifying and developing new, innovative service offerings while maximizing the value of existing services
Facilitate key technology investment decisions and utilization of resources
Foster strong relationships and maintain the MICPA’s reputation as a well-respected leader in business, education, and government
The President is responsible for directing the services of the Association including but not limited to:
Member Engagement and Services
Government and Board Relations
Learning and Development
Marketing and Communications
Finance and Human Resources
Peer Review Practice
BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF CANDIDATE
Extensive experience as an executive leader of an organization, having held senior executive leadership responsibilities with a demonstrated track record of successfully leading through times of significant change and/or strategic growth.
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
A CPA license is desirable but not required.
Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential is desirable but not required.
Ability to reside in Southeast Michigan and travel throughout the state and nation as required.

Management: Extensive experience building and managing large teams (30+ staff) and skilled at motivating others to perform at a higher level and to embrace innovation and change.
Strategic & Innovative: Effective strategist and innovator who is willing to explore and consider many ideas and possibilities and make calculated investments that often will pay off and result in a positive outcome; possesses an ability to both create individually and inspire others to bring exciting ideas to bear.
Governance & Board Relations: A clear understanding of the respective roles of the Board of Directors and management; in particular, the difference between governance and management, and the role of boards in setting or co-creating
Politically Astute: Understands the interests, goals and agendas of a diverse group of stakeholders; able to tactfully and professionally stand up to pressures, drive alignment to an organizational purpose, and influence the process of decision-making to achieve desired results.
Collaboration & Partnership: Works well with a diverse group of individuals; shows respect and value for the skills, experiences, creativity and contributions of others; listens to and acknowledges the feelings, concerns, opinions and ideas of others; able to work, negotiate and manage conflicts with other people seeking to achieve a common goal.
