The Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division (NACS) in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher. You will engage with a multi-disciplinary team on designing and carrying out experiments to investigate chemical processes and hydrodynamics in rapidly condensing plasmas using a variety of laser-based spectroscopic techniques. This position is in the Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Participate in development and testing of new experimental methods to elucidate formation of molecular species and particles in condensing plasmas. - Explore high-temperature chemistry using a variety of laser-based spectroscopic techniques. - Perform and/or interpret compositional analyses of collected particulates from condensing plasmas using a range of analytical tools. - Analyze and interpret experimental data and compare with model predictions. - Function as an independent researcher with a high-level of attention to detail. - Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals. - Maintain professional and institutional visibility through participation in conferences. - Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS - Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering or related field. - Experience using computational modeling tools or programming languages to interpret complex datasets. - Experience in statistical analysis of data. - Programming experience in LabVIEW, JAVA, C++, and Python - Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques and spectral data interpretation. - Experience interpreting data output from a range of analytical techniques (e.g. SEM, EDS, XRD). - Proficient written, verbal, and organizational skills necessary to effectively collaborate within small and large work groups. - Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff. Desired Qualifications - Programming experience in LabVIEW, JAVA, C++, and Python - Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
