St. Thomas School is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Boys Basketball Coach for our Middle School. Because this is a part-time temporary position, typically working less than 20 hours per week, only mandated benefits are offered.

St. Thomas School, a non-sectarian, Preschool through Eighth Grade school, is one of the oldest independent schools on the east side of Lake Washington. Under general supervision, leads one of the Middle School boys’ basketball teams. Season begins on November 4th and concludes on January 31st. Practices and games are held no more than 4 times per week. Practices are on weekdays from 3:30pm – 4:30pm or 4:30pm – 5:30pm. Middle School Games are held on weekdays with start times no later than 5:30pm. There is possibility of one Saturday jamboree play day.
Manages player development based on program core competencies
Works with Director of Athletics to create practice plans that are skill appropriate
Teaches appropriate fundamentals, techniques and skills
Is responsible for the health and safety of the athletes
Conducts player evaluations during tryouts and mid-season review
In cooperation with Director of Athletics, articulates a well-defined and understandable coaching philosophy
Applies developmentally appropriate and age appropriate methods to coaching student-athletes
Emphasizes sportsmanship and leadership among athletes
Clearly communicates to players, parents, administrators and staff
Positively motivates athletes and promotes teamwork
Supervises team bus to and from practice and away games
Attends all meetings and trainings as required by the league and/or Director of Athletics
Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents, including the Coaches Handbook
Since safety and security are everyone’s responsibility, takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials and facilities; travels with first aid kit at all times
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education & Experience:
High School diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred
Demonstrated competence and experience in coaching basketball required
Recent successful coaching experience in an Elementary and/or Middle School environment preferred
Must possess or be willing to obtain valid First Aid/CPR card
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Strong knowledge of the game of basketball including individual techniques and team strategies
Understanding of the developmental needs of middle school-aged students
Efficient, well organized, and able to handle a variety of duties simultaneously
Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the students and program
Professional manner, discretion, and appearance
Energy, enthusiasm and ability to hold students and oneself to high expectations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent customer service skills and strong work ethic
Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
Ability to work and communicate well with students and their parents
Ability to maintain confidential information
Some local travel may be required
Ability to stand for long periods
Awareness of proper body mechanics to prevent injury
Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, walk, and talk
Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Ability to work outside in any weather
