We have openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to conduct research in ab initio nuclear structure and/or reaction theory. You will actively participate in innovative research utilizing state of the art many-body approaches and high-performance computing to accurately describe the structural and/or reaction properties of light nuclei from first principles. These positions are in the Nuclear Data and Theory group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
Essential Duties - Conduct innovative research in ab initio theory of light-nuclei structure and/or reactions. - Contribute and actively participate in the development, implementation and application of new theoretical capabilities and computational algorithms for the purpose of describing structural and/or reaction properties of light nuclei starting from nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions. - Contribute and actively participate in the development of a new integrated framework that combines ab initio approaches, LLNL high-performance computing capabilities and modern statistical analysis to deliver accurate predictions with quantified uncertainties. - Design and carry out relevant numerical simulations on LLNL supercomputers using state of the art ab initio approaches, including the new methods to be developed. - Engage in collaborations between the Nuclear Data and Theory group, internal (LLNL), and external collaborators. - Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory. - Report research results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations and contribute to proposal submissions within the Nuclear Data and Theory group. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Recent PhD in physics or related field. - Experience in theoretical many-body methods applied to nuclear structure and/or nuclear reactions. - Experience developing computer software for theoretical physics problems. - Expertise in C++, C, Fortran, or equivalent computer programming languages and experience with MPI and OpenMP programming. - Ability to perform independent research and find innovative solutions to scientific and technical problems. - Proficient verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively present and explain results of scientific research in presentations at seminars, meetings and journal publications. - Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. Desired Qualifications - Publication record in peer-reviewed literature with experience presenting research results to a large audience. - Experience in statistical analysis applied to uncertainty quantification. - Experience programming for GPU-accelerated systems.

Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
