The Lower School Counselor serves as the “Chief Social Emotional Officer” for the division and provides direct educational and mental health services to students, teachers, and parents in order to establish and maintain a supportive environment for all children in grades K-5. Position: SPA seeks candidates for the position of Lower School Counselor.
Position Begins: July 1, 2020 Status: Full-time, 10.5 Month, Exempt Department: Instructional Support, Lower School
Description: The Lower School Counselor reports to the Lower School Principal and works in close collaboration with the LS Principal, LS Assistant Principal, and LS Learning Specialist, who, with the LS Counselor, comprise the Lower School Administrative Team. Additionally, the Lower School Counselor works closely with the Assistant Head of School for Student Development and Community Engagement for support and supervision on the practice of clinical services provided for students and the development of school policies related to the clinical counseling aspects of the job. The Lower School Counselor must be a caring, curious, and highly skilled professional who knows, understands, and appreciates the developmental journey of children overall, as well as that of each child individually.
Successful candidates will have demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:
Implementation of a proactive school counseling program to support students through advocacy, education, intervention, and prevention activities
Teaching learning strategies, self management and social skills; laying a solid social-emotional skills foundation upon which academic excellence can be built
Recognition of and response to community mental health needs, including assisting students and families in seeking resources
Collaboration with colleagues and parents/guardians/caregivers/family members in order to address children’s social-emotional learning needs
Patience, creativity, positive energy, and a passion for working with young children
Experience working with a range of people from diverse backgrounds with regard to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, learning abilities, socio-economic class, language and nationality
Excellent organizational and (written and oral) communication skills
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work or a related field- required
Graduate degree in psychology, counseling, social work or a related field- preferred
Professional certification in mental-health related field- preferred
Experience working in an independent school setting is preferred
