Function: In the ‘Iolani residential life program, we aspire that the One-Team spirit is reflected in all we do so that our boarding students benefit from an education at one of the top college preparatory schools in the nation and from living in a community that instills lifelong values.
`Iolani’s dormitory, completed in 2018, is a five-story building with faculty and staff housing on the first floor and each upper floor comprised of 14 double occupancy rooms, a large common room, study room and communal bathroom. Residential life on each floor follows the house system with the House Dean managing a team of house parents to provide a vibrant, engaging, safe, One-Team experience for the students. The house teams are supported by the Dean of Residential Life, the Associate Dean of Residential Life, Residential Operations Coordinator, Social and Emotional Health Coordinator and an academic support staff. The House Dean is part of the Residential Life Administrative Team.
The overarching goal of the residential life program is the seamless integration of boarding students within the larger day student population so that they take full advantage of all opportunities at `Iolani School and embrace our One-Team values of work ethic, intellectual humility, respect for others, and teamwork. It is often heard at `Iolani that “you are known” and “we achieve together” and it is essential that our developing boarding program provides a student experience consistent with these long-held traditions.
Operationally, House Deans are part of the Residential Life Administrative Team and work to articulate and administer policies that ensure a safe and healthy environment for the residential student community. House Deans oversee a staff of five House Parents (‘Iolani faculty and staff) and with support of other admin team members, work to create an atmosphere and unique personality of their House. House Deans also work closely with each other to ensure the necessary consistency of rules, policies and procedures throughout the four houses in the dormitory. House Deans can expect other members of the admin team to be active participants and programmatic leaders in the residential life program within their areas of expertise.
