The Upper School Learning Specialist provides supervisory and professional expertise in all areas of academic support systems. They coordinate and manage all campus resources utilized by students with learning differences and provide support for teachers and parents regarding students’ specific needs. The Learning Specialist is responsible for developing and supervising individual educational plans with emphasis on increasing a student’s understanding of and advocacy for his or her learning challenges. In close partnership with the Director of Upper School, the Student Services Team, the College Counseling Team, and other offices as appropriate, the Learning Specialist offers a student-centered environment that supports Maret’s academic programs. The Upper School Learning Specialist reports directly to the Director of Upper School. A master’s degree in Learning Disabilities or Special Education and a minimum of 5 years of experience as a high school learning specialist preferred. Professionalism and the ability to deal with sensitive and confidential issues are vital in this role. The Upper School Learning Specialist must have a strong and demonstrated commitment to Equity & Inclusion and reflect Maret’s Mission and Core Values.
Read all formal neuropsychological evaluations. Write, monitor, and communicate to faculty all individual educational plans for students with learning differences, ADHD, mental health challenges (in coordination with the school counselor), and physical health challenges (in coordination with the health office).
Assess students and provide/recommend appropriate support for all aspects of their academic life including but not limited to writing skills, organization, time management, study skills, self advocacy, and stress management.
Conduct departmental meetings on matters of student progress
Maintain a current list of educational testers and provide appropriate information to families needing this service
Oversee all tutors and the tutoring program on campus, vetting incoming tutors through a detailed interview process, scheduling and managing room assignments, and referring approved tutors to inquiring families.
Collaborate with Middle School Learning Specialist to prepare students and families for the transition to the Upper School
Observe classes in order to appraise and support programs and instructional effectiveness
Assist classroom teachers in selecting, locating, and securing instructional materials and developing skills and techniques for diverse learning styles
Offer faculty resources and workshops about differentiating curriculum and the most recent research about academic support.
Collaborate with Admission Office concerning prospective students
Oversee the accommodations request process for college admissions standardized testing and the administration of these tests for school-based testers
Oversee and manage the Quiet Study Room schedule and proctors
Serve on the Student Support Team meeting weekly to discuss student needs across divisions
Serve as an advisor to Upper School students.
