The Board of Trustees of Coastal Electric Cooperative (CEC) invite applications for the position of President and CEO. The current CEO has announced his retirement and the Board has contracted with Holmes Executive Search LLC to facilitate the search process.
CEC (coastal.coop) is a growing electric distribution cooperative that serves more than 11,000 members in three counties west of Charleston, South Carolina. CEC is primarily a rural cooperative with 97% residential and 3% commercial and industrial facilities. CEC has 40 employees and revenue in excess of $28 million; providing safe and reliable electric service to the low country area in South Carolina.
CEC’s mission is “To provide diversified, innovative energy and related services to its customers consistent with sound business practices, while always acting in a community-building leadership role.” Therefore, the successful candidate needs to be able to communicate effectively with a diverse membership, stakeholders, as well as with team members. Candidate must be a proven leader of great integrity with strong management, mentoring and team building experience. Candidate must have strong business acumen reflecting their ability to grasp complex industry specific and general business practices and their impact on the membership.
They must demonstrate an ability to lead the strategic, risk management, operational, engineering technology, customer service and financial planning initiatives and functions required in an electric distribution cooperative. A firm grasp of the electric utility industries’ evolving legislative and regulatory challenges is critical. Demonstrated progressive career advancement at the senior management level in the electric utility industry is required. An understanding and respect of the cooperative principles and business model is desired. The successful candidate will have excellent people skills and represent the co-op well in the community. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred or appropriate level of experience.
An understanding of governance and the CEO/ Board relationship is highly desirable.
The cooperative headquarters is in Walterboro, South Carolina, within Colleton County with a population over 36,000. Walterboro is located 48 miles west of Charleston and is located near the ACE Basin region in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Located on Interstate 95, its proximity to Charleston and Savannah provides easy access to the more urban amenities, while enjoying the smaller town charms.
