Athora was founded by Athene, a leading US life insurer with ~$4 bn market cap, and Apollo, a world-leading alternative asset manager with $39 bn in private equity and $330 bn in total AUM. Having completed a €2.2bn capital raise in 2017 and following the earlier acquisition of Delta Lloyd Germany, Athora acquired Aegon Ireland and Generali Belgium (followed by the sale of the Belgian non-life business to Baloise Group). Subsequently, Athora acquired Vivat in 2019 in a very competitive process, striking the largest continental European insurance deal that year. Today, it's in the process of closing, anticipated in April 2020. The acquisition of Vivat is a truly transformational deal, taking group headcount from 800 to 3,000. It opens new geographies and brings the group to c. €70bn in assets, well ahead of its business plan. In the meantime, Athora raised a further €1.8 bn of capital in 2020 to support Vivat and future transactions.
