Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences, an expeditionary learning school, is seeking a full-time innovative, dynamic, collaborative middle school history teacher with a strong background in teaching middle school and in teaching history, geography, and culture for the 2020-21 school year.
With COVID-19 affecting many children around the globe, the Arts & Sciences middle school program is still dedicated to teaching the whole child, through collaboration and ingenuity, we use our strong foundation in EL Education to teach young learners to be active and engaged citizens in the world. New Mexico's Governor's rapid response to the COVID-19 pandemic along with Santa Feans compliance with public health orders, have kept Santa Fe's coronavirus cases low. Arts & Sciences is committed to keeping our teachers and students safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have established a comprehensive health and safety plan and daily health screenings for students and staff. Our school is also currently upgrading our outdoor campus spaces and technology capabilities to effectively work with students both on campus and remotely.
We are especially interested in candidates who are mindful and enthusiastic about cross-disciplinary connections, particularly with the humanities (English/History) team to support future program innovations and create learning expeditions that honor current events and our commitment to racial justice and equality.
The successful candidate will understand the developmental needs of adolescents (ages 12-14) and combine their knowledge of history, geography and culture, with humor, energy, and a desire to inspire middle school students. They will model and promote the school’s character traits of compassion, courage, respect, trust, honesty and stewardship. Our school upholds the values of diversity and inclusivity and the successful candidate is able to create a safe and nurturing learning environment in which all students are respected. Additionally, the candidate must be flexible and an excellent communicator and collaborator. A deep understanding of middle school philosophy and a commitment to the academic and social/emotional growth of students is essential.
The SFSAS middle school history teacher also serves as a middle school advisor for a small group of students. These responsibilities include regular meetings with individual students, being a student advocate, communicating with teachers and families regarding students’ academic and social progress, and other related student supports.

Teach one elective class per semester that connects a teacher’s passion and the interest of our middle school students
Qualifications and Attributes
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in History (U.S. and/or World), the Classics, Social Sciences or Social Sciences Education or related field
Experience working with Middle School students as a history teacher or related subject area
A passion for the history/social sciences
Understanding of learning styles and differentiated instruction
Ability to design hands-on, experiential learning activities that advance learning and present real-life opportunities
Ability to work with technology to support, supplement and enhance teaching and learning
Affinity and enthusiasm for working with adolescents
Excellent communication skills
Capacity to inspire others
