Under general supervision of a Pulmonary Medical Director and Department Manager and direct supervision of a Respiratory Care Supervisor or Charge Therapist provides respiratory care to pediatrics through geriatrics. Responsibilities include emergency and general patient care assignments and related patient care plans where assignment and duties are of low to moderate complexity. The student respiratory therapist is only allowed to practice on moderate to high complexity patients or procedures under supervision of a fully licensed RRT.
Qualifications: EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Current enrollment in a two to four year AMA approved training program in respiratory care.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Must demonstrate clinical competence in the areas of responsibility. Must demonstrate ability to communicate in written and verbal fashion. Must demonstrate ability to work well with other team members. Must demonstrate high level of organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Must possess a valid temporary license from the State of Massachusetts. Updated BLS certification required. NRP certification preferred, but not required.
INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Must communicate effectively with department manager, supervisors, and patient care team members. Must communicate effectively with patients/family in the course of respiratory care delivery and patient/family educational activities. Collaborates with supervisor/charge therapist to develop respiratory patient care plans and correct any problematic situations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires full range of body motion including: handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye hand coordination. Involves standing for long periods and walking long distances. Occasionally must lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequently involves pulling or pushing heavy equipment. Requires normal visual accuracy and hearing. Requires exposure to bodily fluids. Physical health must be sufficient to meet the energy demands of the position. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND LEVEL OF AUTONOMY: Only allowed to function in areas approved on the temporary license. Must demonstrate competence in areas of responsibility. Allowed to deliver therapy according to physician order as defined by departmental Policy and Procedure and AARC clinical practice guidelines. Reports and discusses all unclear and problematic clinical issues with supervisor/charge therapist prior to completing therapy or procedure.
