Alden Research Laboratory, Inc. (Alden) is seeking a self-motivated Hydraulic/ Water Resource Engineer to join our, multidisciplinary team in Portland OR.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to work on truly one-of-a-kind projects in hydraulic, fisheries and power engineering. Work involves close coordination with multifaceted projects including hydraulic and fisheries evaluations and engineering design. This position will provide the opportunity to be involved from project conception, feasibility and hydraulic studies, to final design.
The successful candidate must be able to quickly learn and apply new engineering concepts. Only candidates that clearly demonstrate a passion for hydraulics, fisheries, and/or power engineering will be considered. Hydraulic modeling and design experience is a plus. A strong fundamental background in civil, and hydraulic engineering is required. In addition to strong technical skills, the candidate must have good oral and written communications skills.
This engineering position requires an understanding of hydraulic concepts such as open channel flow and pressurized pipe flow. Engineering focus will be on hydroelectric project design, thermal power generation intake structures and fish passage. The candidate will be responsible for developing proposals, interacting with clients, executing projects, and writing technical reports. The candidate must be a team player but be comfortable working independently.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s Degree is a plus)
5 to 10 years’ experience in water resources field with hydro experience a plus
Registered Professional Engineer
Proven ability to manage projects and market services
Good verbal and written communications skills
Proficient with AutoCAD
Experience with hydraulic modeling is a plus
Ability to quickly learn and apply new engineering concepts
Authorization to work permanently in the US

Alden maintains a wide variety of state-of-the-art numeric modeling programs and expertise, including several commercial CFD codes: ANSYS Fluent, FLOW-3D and STAR CCM+. Combining computational expertise with over a century's worth of experience in physical flow modeling gives Alden the unique ability to apply both in concert for cost-effective, practical solutions to our client’s flow problems.
We have extensive experience and conducted numerous evaluations and hydraulic model studies of fresh water intakes, flood control pumping stations, sewerage pumping plants, cooling water intakes, reactor containment sumps, pump storage intake structures, and other pump intakes, all of which have required observations of approach flow patterns, identification of vortices, and evaluation of swirling flow approaching pumps. Alden has also conducted considerable research in the area of vortex formation and suppressors, and scale effects on vortices in Froude models. Members of our staff have written chapters for various handbooks and manuals on pump intakes and swirling flow. Andy Johansson, Director of Hydraulic Modeling at Alden, currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Hydraulic Institute (HI) Intake Design Committee and actively participates on the HI Pump Piping Standards Committee.
