Reporting to the Manager, Transportation Strategy, this position performs supervisory duties related to the development and implementation of data-driven road safety improvements and programs in alignment with identified priorities: research, recommend, develop and implement pro-active and reactive programs/projects to advance road safety for all users, coordinate supporting studies and respond to Councillor and resident inquiries on road safety matters.
What can I expect to do in this role?
As the Supervisor, Neighbourhood Traffic you will: • Oversee and support the work of staff and consultants/contractors including providing daily direction aligned with identified priorities, performing traffic studies and traffic and pedestrian safety programs, reviewing subdivision/site plan drawings, and maintenance of the town’s Traffic By-law. • Delegate and monitor work according to agreed policies and procedures to ensure it is performed effectively and efficiently and in accordance with town standards, levels of service, specifications, policies, procedures and legislated requirements. • Train staff, resolve immediate performance issues and review employee performance on a regular basis, delivering corrective and/or disciplinary action as required. • Coordinate and approve working hours, overtime and vacation schedules. • Administer health and safety practices. • Maintain constructive relationship with unions. • Supervise and support responses to inquiries/requests/complaints from residents, members of Council, other departments and agencies, senior management, including any required research and analysis, site visits, and follow-up inclusion of the item in any relevant program. • Represent the Town and Department in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner. • Maintain current knowledge base of emerging programs, ongoing technical and procedural improvements in municipal traffic management and safety practices. • Investigate internal processes and identify measures to improve efficiency and performance. • Assist the Manager and other staff in the development and budgeting of section transportation projects, and various other department projects. • Participate in various interdepartmental or corporate programs and initiatives. • Prepare and present reports in all areas of responsibility to Council and the public, as required.
How do I qualify?
• Successful completion of a three-year diploma or degree in engineering technology or applied science program combined with a minimum 5 years related experience. • At a minimum, Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (O.A.C.E.T.T) (this position may also be of interest to those registered as a licensed Professional Engineer in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).) • Experience at a supervisory level an asset. • Knowledgeable and proficient with PC based computer applications: MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel • Knowledge of specialized traffic software (e.g. TES Traffic Engineering Software), Geographical Information System (GIS), and work order systems. • Must be able to interpret and understand Engineering Construction drawings. • Good interpersonal and communication skills to represent the Department in a professional and courteous manner when working with contractors, consultants, and the public. • Knowledgeable and familiar with MTO Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (UTCD).
