Powhatan School
Powhatan seeks an innovative and experienced Director of Development to join its leadership team and spearhead a reenergized Development Office. Established in 1948, Powhatan School is an independent PK-8 Day School accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is a member of both the National Association of Independent Schools and Independent Education. With an enrollment of 240, Powhatan serves families in Clarke County, Frederick County, Western Loudoun County, Warren County, Winchester City and the panhandle of West Virginia.
DETAILS OF THE POSITION Under the direction of the Head of School, and in close partnership with the Board of Trustees, the Director of Development will be responsible for developing and implementing a development plan to increase annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, foundation, corporate, government and event revenue. This role will also lead, manage, and supervise the daily fundraising operations of Powhatan along with providing direct supervision of the Development Database Assistant. As a member of Powhatan School’s senior management team, the Director of Development must be a collaborative and creative leader who is a liaison to the Development Committee and the Committee on Trustees, providing direction, support, and information to these committees on a wide range of Powhatan development efforts. This includes the new school-wide strategic planning process(es), capital campaigns, and Powhatan’s forthcoming 75th Anniversary celebration.
SCOPE OF WORK Build a Culture of Philanthropy: Ensure the entire Powhatan community appreciates and understands the importance of making Powhatan a philanthropic priority. Build up the current culture of philanthropy while making it robust and vibrant. Comprehensive Development Planning: Under the direction of the Head of School and Board of Trustees, lead the implementation of a comprehensive and cohesive development planning process, be able to set and meet annual fundraising goals, create and deliver the development plan and ensure that it is appropriate over time. Contribute to both annual and long-range development campaign strategies (including capital campaign efforts) that support sustainability and growth across all funding areas, in service of Powhatan's mission, vision, and values. Institutional and Major Giving: Significantly increase philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government at local, regional, and national levels by personally building a portfolio of major gift prospects and meeting annual goals. Events: Coordinate volunteers and oversee the execution of annual fundraising events. Supervisory Responsibilities: Provide guidance to Development Assistant. Actively collaborate to foster Powhatan's culture of philanthropy, develop organizational funding priorities, track key development performance metrics, provide rigorous management of Powhatan’s donor base, and ensure clear communication and streamlined processes. Act as an available and effective liaison with the Board of Trustees. Working Conditions: Typical schedule is Monday-Friday (8-9 hours per day) with some early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary. Compensation: This is a full-time exempt position, offering a competitive annual salary, commensurate with experience.
