The Manager of Engineering maintains and enhances the delivery of electric energy and related services to the Cooperative's membership by managing the engineering department's activities and resources through planning, implementing, and evaluating its functioning. Assists the Vice President of Engineering and Operations by keeping them informed of major engineering initiatives, project milestones, and end results that are being achieved. Provides reports and information regarding progress and developments to provide information to other departments and seeks professional and technical assistance, as needed, from staff departments and consultants to enable all system departments to discharge their assigned responsibilities and secure desired results.
The Manager of Engineering will have an opportunity to manage the planning and engineering for RURALBAND, a cooperative subsidiary offering broadband service within the Cooperative's service territory.
Essential Job Functions
Protects and enhances the life expectancy of the Cooperative's assets by planning, developing, and recommending appropriate policies with respect to system engineering planning, design development, maintenance, and safety.
Maintains a high level of coordination in the Cooperative's purchasing function by making timely technical and economic evaluations of special equipment, transformer, meter equipment prior to purchases (e.g., system loss evaluations).
Maximizes the efficiency of the Engineering Department by following data metrics and keeping projects on schedule and within budget.
Maximizes the efficient use of the cooperative's resources by staying within the budget.
Participates in the development of the Cooperative’s operating practices and policies, strategic objectives, long-range forecasting, and financial planning.
Performs cost/benefit analysis and works with operations, information technology and accounting to study and select viable technologies to carry out the strategic initiatives of the Cooperative.
Manages the construction and upgrades of substations and associated down line devices.
Develops and mentors his/her direct reports on knowledge, efficiency, and project deliverables.
Ability to learn and manage PGECs new Fiber to the Home (FTTH) broadband construction initiatives.
Ability to be a strategic thinker that understands the long-term objectives and strategic construction plans for the organization.
Communicate with membership and internal leadership on the progress of major strategic initiatives and system engineering planning projects.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
10+ years of Electric Utility Engineering experience.
Demonstrated supervisory skills and proven project management experience.
Preferred Requirements
Knowledge of distribution overhead and underground systems designs and operations and maintenance as per RUS specifications in both 12.47 kV and 25 kV.
Registered Professional Engineer within the state of Virginia or be able to obtain one within 1-year of employment with the Cooperative.
Preferred candidate will have budgeting and financial analysis experience, possess strong project management experience. Skills required for this role include but are not limited to detail-oriented, strong organizational skills, excellent written as well as verbal communication skills, and the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
