Science Department Chair

Rye Country Day School is seeking a Chair of the Science Department beginning August 2021. At RCDS, the Department Chair is responsible for the overall leadership, supervision, and support of the Department and works collaboratively with the Division Principals to ensure effective administration of department affairs.

The Department Chair will:

• Support the School’s mission and philosophy as well as strategic initiatives
• Coordinate the PK-12 curriculum
• Work with Principals in assessing the scope and sequence of the curriculum; oversee the Department’s Atlas Rubicon database
• Schedule and lead regular department meetings
• Assist in the hiring and mentoring of new teachers and Fellows
• Visit classes of department members on a periodic basis
• Provide coaching and support for veteran teachers
• Participate in the Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation (CFE) process with the Division Principals to provide consistent feedback, guidance, and support to Department members
• Oversee course selection and student placement with Principals
• Serve as a member of the Safety Committee, overseeing chemical safety management
• Serve on the Academic Affairs Committee and Curriculum Council
• Manage the department budget
• Model effective classroom teaching for department members and teach an appropriate number of courses
• Demonstrate an approach that is nurturing and supportive of students and faculty
• Communicate professionally and effectively with administrators, colleagues, and parents
• Demonstrate an interest in professional development, particularly to stay current and explore new ideas in the discipline; organize in-house and communicate external professional development experiences
• Assist in coordinating the external peer review process for the department
• Advocate for school policies and practices that ensure pedagogical success for the department
• Find coverage for classes when department members are away from school
• Serve as an Academic Advisor in one of the divisions
• Participate in meetings, field trips, special activities, and rotational duties
• Regularly write reports that evaluate student performance and demonstrate knowledge of students’ experiences
