Founded in 1910, St. Anne’s-Belfield has an established reputation as the best-in-class independent day and boarding school in Charlottesville, Va. Our 850+ girls and boys age 2 to Grade 12 are at the center of our every decision, and our teachers, coaches, and staff continually improve their own knowledge and apply new skills in service to them. The School’s new director of athletics will play a pivotal role in fully delivering on our promise to support the whole learner — body, heart, mind, soul — so that they may become exemplary citizens and visionary leaders.
These are some of the questions we are asking ourselves as a School that the next director of athletics will help shape:
How do we create a comprehensive and competitive athletic program that is also healthy, child-first, and mission-appropriate?
What is the future of interscholastic athletics, and how do we navigate to the forefront of that changing, competitive landscape in a way that is authentic to our School’s philosophy and values?
How should we best create a program for our youngest students based on our values, research, and best practices? What role does our Middle School and JV program play in this?
What support do our coaches and trainers require to continue their legacy of success and the meaningful, enduring bonds they possess with our students?
Are our facilities adequate for our students and our expectation of excellence?
In what ways can we advance our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our athletic programs?
What’s the best way to create a fun, educational, and competitive intramural program and expand access to our co-curricular physical activity options for all students?
What opportunities should we pursue with the organizations in the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle community and at the University of Virginia?
How can we strengthen our commitment to physical education as a component of whole-child wellness?
Reporting to the head of school, the next director of athletics will exemplify our School values of integrity, curiosity, diversity, creativity, agency, and impact. This person will oversee both strategic development and day-to-day operations of the athletic program, including managing staff, coaches, and facilities across the School’s two campuses. Highly collaborative and high energy, the director will work collaboratively with fellow senior leadership, as well as work with the offices of development, communications, and admissions to nurture relationships with athletics boosters and donors, members of the media, and prospective students.
A successful candidate will have: A commitment to the development and recruitment of student-athletes for mission-driven organizations, ideally in K12 school environments; experience navigating the DI and DIII recruitment process for boys and girls who hope to play at the collegiate level; demonstrated success in managing an athletics program with a minimum of five years at the senior level; a high level of integrity, drive, vision, communication, and collaboration skills; experience providing media interviews and building trust-based relationships with colleagues and stakeholders; a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; a bachelor's degree(master's preferred).
