The Director of Engineering provides direction and oversight of the strategic plan, budget and work execution of SunCommon’s engineering and site evaluation teams, and the expected contributions to the larger company financial goals. The Director of Engineering also evaluates new solar and energy storage products, and ensures code and quality control compliance. The position requires expert communication and organization with a strong focus on continuous process improvement. The Director of Engineering plays a key role moving customer orders through to readiness for installation. The Director of Engineering reports directly to one of SunCommon’s Co-Presidents. This position can work from one of our two offices located in Rhinebeck, NY or Waterbury, VT, or it can also be remotely located.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Director of Engineering will:
Help to make SunCommon the most referred and highly reviewed solar company through concerted focus on the customer and continuous process improvement
Manage our Residential and Commercial site evaluation and engineering teams, with approximately 25 direct and indirect team members
Serve as the company’s product technology leader
Provide leadership to the company’s residential and commercial engineering and design teams, with a goal to implementing common tools and procedures to maximize organizational flexibility and effectiveness
Evaluate and approve new products and vendors with an eye to delivering value to the company and its customers and ensuring compliance
Ensure all PV and energy storage systems are designed in accordance with NYSERDA, local permitting, NEC and SunCommon standards using drawings, schematics, and instructions
Stay up to date with industry codes and standards, and SunCommon best practices driving safe, high quality, and efficient installations
Work closely with our VP of Sales and Marketing, marketing and sales directors, Director of Installations, and Project Managers to shorten cycle times and improve our customer’s experience
Implement systems that provide for effective tracking and staff accountability in achieving goals
Travel within our territories as required to promote strong personal relationships and staff management
The ideal candidate for this position will meet the following requirements:

Degree in Electrical Engineering
NABCEP certification preferred
Familiarity with construction and/or solar system design and implementation
Experience analyzing information and evaluating new products

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience providing guidance and direction to team members, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance
Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and provide coaching and mentoring to improve knowledge or skills

Valid driver’s license and flexibility to travel throughout our region when needed.
