Located in the Arbor Heights neighborhood of West Seattle, Westside serves 380 students in preschool through eighth grade. 30% of our student body are Black, Indigenous and People of Color. Westside’s Middle School serves 150 students in 5th-8th grade, and is organized into 5/6 and 7/8 grade level teams, who collaborate to both implement and design meaningful curriculum.
Westside seeks to find a dynamic individual as a Long-term Substitute Science Teacher for 5th & 6th grades. Thisis a temporary position (October 1 – December 17, 2021) filling in for our regular teacher who will be out on paternity leave during this time. The successful applicant joins a five-person 5th-6th grade team. This role is responsible for implementing a challenging and age-appropriate curriculum for instruction in science for our 5th and 6th grades as well as a weekly Flex (elective) class. The Science Teacher works collaboratively with the middle school faculty and participates fully in the life of the school, attending meetings, school celebrations, and upholds the mission, vision, and values of Westside School.
Reports to: Middle School Head
Teach 45 minute classes to two sections of 5th and 6th graders four times a week (16 blocks) as well as one Flex (elective) class.
Promote and advance the cognitive, emotional, social and physical well-being of the students during science classes.
Implement and adapt an engaging experiential curriculum.
Coordinate regularly with the 5th and 6th grade teaching team about curriculum and areas of study.
Meet with the Director of Learning Support and Instruction as needed to discuss student progress and identified needs and interventions..
Assess student learning and present this learning in formal trimester reports.
Communicate with parents as needed.
Maintain science curriculum materials.
Cover recess and study hall duty weekly.
Other duties as assigned.
Successful candidates will have the following personal and professional attributes:
Minimum of two years of 3-8 science teaching or general classroom experience.
A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in education, science, or a related field.
Experience in a variety of instructional techniques and approaches.
Skill and experience at differentiated instruction.
Enthusiasm for working collaboratively with colleagues including the desire to implement curriculum experiences.
Familiarity and facility with current research informing teaching and learning.
A commitment to building cultural competencies and awareness through one’s teaching
