The Head of Middle School is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Middle School Division (grades 5-8). The Head of Middle School, a senior member of the Administrative Team, reports directly to the Head of School and has the opportunity to lead a talented and dedicated faculty. Specifically, the Division Head oversees curriculum, budget, citizenship, attendance, advisor program and growth of the Middle School, creating distinguishing program features that set it apart from other area schools in caliber and offerings.
Along with the Associate Head of School, the Division Head carries out the process of teacher supervision, evaluation and professional development, including evaluation and support of Department Chairs. The Head of Middle School works collaboratively with two other Division Heads, Head Class Advisors, Department Chairs and a cohesive senior administrative team.
The successful candidate will have the energy, experience and determination to work collaboratively with faculty and students — to continue to build a healthy, warm, friendly, diverse, academic and extracurricular culture where each student is respected for who they are and in which rigor is truly enhanced by balance and wellbeing.
The Head of Middle School must also be able to lead amidst exciting curricular change, ensuring more opportunities for experiential, innovative, inclusive and diverse global teaching and learning. The successful candidate must also have a strong commitment to our Social Justice program and objectives, working closely with the Director of Social Justice.
Specifically, the responsibilities of the Head of Middle School include:
ACADEMIC - The Head of Middle School is responsible for the academic program of the Middle School.
Supervising the Middle School academic program and coordinating the academic program between the departments
Leading faculty through change in curricular and cultural growth
Maintaining a positive and mission appropriate academic environment for all members of the Middle School community
FACULTY - The Head of Middle School is responsible for the growth, development, and supervision of Middle School faculty.
Chairing all Middle School faculty meetings and attending all grade level meetings
Orienting new Middle School faculty members at the start of the school year
Supervising faculty reviews with department chairs and reviewing annual faculty evaluations with department chairs, Associate and Head of School
Working collaboratively with Associate Head of School and Department Chairs to aid in faculty growth and development
Maintaining high faculty morale while creating and building upon a specific rubric for faculty evaluation and growth that include clear expectations about being an excellent teacher and professional community member at Tower Hill
Assisting the Head and Associate Heads of School and Dean of Hiring and Recruitment with the interviewing and selection of teaching candidates
Helping to determine all non-academic faculty assignments
STUDENTS - The Head of Middle School is responsible and supervises those who are responsible for all aspects of student life.
Supervising and supporting the Middle School Head Class Advisors
Creating and supporting ways for fostering the whole Middle School child
Supporting all types of learners and helping teachers do the same
Understanding the ever changing nature of middle school students and providing an environment that is both nurturing and structured
Supervising and supporting all Middle School extra-curricular activities, including athletics
Supporting student involvement in our arts and music programs, being present at recitals and productions
Overseeing and attending Assemblies
Helping to organize Moving Up Day and all spring activities
Calendar Committee - planning and arranging the scheduling of the yearly cycle of events for the entire school year: field trips, special events, special days, concerts, plays, etc
Admission Committee - interviewing and helping to select candidates for the Middle School when asked by the Director of Admission
Parents Committee - attending and reporting on the Middle School at meetings
