The Director of the Center for Service will offer and support the Mount’s mission to form students to have hearts for service during their academic careers and to bring this heart into service for God and the world after graduation. The Director will act as a centralized support to the service opportunities offered by university constituencies, and will offer training's and guidance to unite service offerings in a common culture. This culture will be rooted in the Catholic identity of the university and the rich principles of Catholic social teaching, particularly the call to work for a world worthy of the dignity of the human person. Special attention will be given to the offerings coming from the Center for Service led by the student leadership team (CORE).
Working collaboratively with institutional leadership, department and unit heads, and many others is critical in order to build relationships, share resources, and help create an integrated vision and shared responsibility for advancing opportunities for and a culture of service on campus. Qualitative and quantitative data will be collected and shared to be able to tell the story of service at the Mount and “export our goodness” beyond the university. This position will also be responsible for growing and nurturing relationships with community partners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Advance the rich principles of Catholic social teaching - social justice and solidarity - as a foundation and grounding which affirms the dignity and respect of the human person and the call to build a society worthy of that dignity.
Integrate service across the university through partnerships with campus constituencies which build a common culture of service while maintaining appropriate subsidiarity for personal initiatives.
Create modules to help current and incoming staff members develop a common language and understanding of the Mount’s culture of service.
Build a culture of encounter through innovative service experiences offered by the Center of Service and led by trained student leaders.
Build on preexisting training to develop the skills of current and onboard new student leaders who will embody a culture of encounter and respect for human dignity and facilitate the majority of the service offerings for the Mount community.
Facilitate and coordinate opportunities to tell the story of service at the Mount utilizing diverse forms of media to reach a broad audience including, but not limited to, current students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff and prospective students.
Work collaboratively with the chairs for Service Learning and research and development to grow Service Learning, Semester of Service, and new opportunities for service in the local community.
Supervise and support the work of the coordinator to maintain current and build new community partner relationships with a special focus in northern Frederick County.
Support and collaborate with the Student Life Division (e.g., Dean of Student Life Office, Center for Student Diversity, Center for Campus Ministry, etc.) on programs and initiatives related to service offerings and programming.
Prepare, present and oversee annual budgets related to the office.
The successful candidate should possess a master’s degree in a relevant field, including but not limited to sociology, social work or entrepreneurship, and have a proven record of success in higher education.
5-8 years of experience creating, managing, and assessing service learning programs in higher education.
Job Requirements: Education/Experience/Skills
Demonstrate commitment to the Catholic, liberal arts mission of the university including familiarity with and use of Catholic social teaching.
Have experience in program development within higher education and a demonstrated ability to mobilize diverse constituencies across campus to engage in service programs.
Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with campus constituencies across disciplines and responsibilities, in face-to-face large group and individual settings, as well as mediated modes, such as email, Zoom, phone, etc.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in facilitation/presentation.
Knowledge of and ability to master use of social media tools (such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) to promote the Center for Service and affiliated programs.
Experience developing and administering systems of assessment to track service work and program development.\
Strong planning and execution experience with social justice campus delivery.
Able to work through ambiguity and changing environments.
Extensive background in working with a very diverse campus student community, as well as serving a very diverse community constituency.
Selected candidate should be creative, entrepreneurial, have high energy, able to caste an irresistible, and incredible vision for service learning in the co-curricular life of students.
