The National Hydropower Association (NHA) is seeking a Legislative Affairs Manager to join NHA’s efforts to champion hydropower, America’s first renewable energy resource, as an essential part of a reliable, carbon-free electricity system.
About NHA: NHA is a national non-profit trade association dedicated exclusively to advancing the interests of the U.S. hydropower industry, including conventional, pumped storage, and new marine and hydrokinetic technologies. NHA’s membership consists of over 270 organizations, including consumer-owned utilities, investor-owned utilities, independent power producers, equipment manufacturers, and environmental, engineering, and legal consultants. Employees of these member organizations participate in a variety of committees and councils to connect with one another, discuss/debate important topics, share insights with one another, and do the work of the association.
Position Purpose & Responsibilities: NHA is hiring a Legislative Affairs Manager to lead NHA’s Pumped Storage Committee and to enhance the organization’s ability to:
- advocate to preserve, enhance, and expand the use of waterpower generation,
- inform members about timely policy and technical developments, and
- connect members with other waterpower professionals.
The Legislative Affairs Specialist will assist the Director of Government Affairs in growing and strengthening NHA’s Pumped Storage and Legislative Affairs Committees, advocating for NHA’s legislative priorities in front of Congress and state legislatures, representing NHA at industry events, developing content for NHA’s regional and national events, and effectively communicating key developments to Committee/Council participants.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Serve as the staff lead for NHA’s Pumped Storage Committee.
- Collaborate with the Director of Government Affairs to execute NHA’s federal and state legislative agenda, including licensing and tax reform, and other policies to support the waterpower industry.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in planning, organizing, and/or leading sessions at NHA events, such as NHA’s Waterpower Week in Washington, Clean Currents, and regional meetings, among others.
- Draft articles, issue alerts, fact sheets, and other information to inform NHA’s membership, the waterpower industry, and the public about key issues and opportunities relating to the waterpower industry.
- Build relationships with Congressional staff on both sides of the aisle.
- Perform policy research as necessary/requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field, and three to five years of professional work experience;
- Background related to the field, such as experience with renewable energy generally or hydropower specifically;
- Experience working in a Congressional office, a legislative affairs capacity, or in a business association or related membership-based organization; and
- Track record executing under tight deadlines.
- Dynamic communication skills with strong writing and analytical ability and a healthy sense of humor.
