PRESIDENT & CEO - JOB DESCRIPTION
The Prince William Chamber of Commerce (the “Chamber”) is a 501(C)6 organization through which the voluntary labor of our community works effectively to make the Northern Virginia region a better place to live, work and play. The Chamber is organized for the purpose of advancing the positive business growth and development of Prince William County, the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park (together, the “Prince William Region”). It encourages the growth of existing industries and businesses, while giving all proper assistance to any new businesses looking to locate in the Prince William Region. The Chamber strives to support all activities believed to be beneficial to connecting its’ members to the business community, and in general seeks to enhance the standard of living for area citizens, looking to accomplish the greatest good for the economy. The Chamber currently has more than 1,150 member businesses and organizations who employ more than 70,000 people in our community. The President & CEO (the “CEO”) will represent the Chamber and the Chamber Board of Directors (the “Board”) across varied interactions with membership, outside individuals, public sector agencies and officials, legislators, various constituencies, and with the public, all requiring judgment and tact to foster good community/chamber relations.
GENERAL DUTIES:
The CEO shall have responsibility for the day-to-day business operations of the Chamber. The CEO shall assist the officers of the Chamber and the Committee Chairpersons in the performance of their duties and shall perform other duties assigned by the Chairperson or the Board. The CEO must perform all duties and task in accordance with the Bylaws of the Chamber and the directives of the Board and its Chairperson.
The CEO will be a champion for change that matters and a catalyst to the business growth and development for the Chamber. The CEO must ignite innovation, be a forward thinker and encourage an environment which embraces its members and the surrounding community. The CEO will lead with great intention, the programs, events, committees, and councils and strive to include everyone and all industries. The CEO will have a strong stance for working together effectively with senior leaders, volunteers, and the community members at large, to garner positive results. The CEO will be a strong communicator, who can connect with all people and serve on boards that make sense to the growth and development of the Chamber. The CEO must be a results-driven leader who motivates and coordinates the chamber’s volunteer leaders and staff in championing local business interests, growing the regional economy and identifying new program opportunities that address issues of importance to the greater Prince William Region community. The CEO is responsible for advancing the organization’s mission while modeling its values and by leading the organization’s people to performing in their roles in the most professional manner. This executive will ensure that the Chamber’s annual program of work is developed in alignment with its strategic plan and successfully implemented, that goals and objectives for the Chamber are established and met, that the Chamber maintains resources sufficient to conduct its mission, and the organization is financially stable. The CEO is responsible for the administration of the Chamber and its volunteer efforts and for the Chamber’s participation in other activities beneficial to the greater Prince William Region business community.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare the Chamber'sannual budget and plan of work for consideration and approval by the Board.Managing the overall financial health of the organization while suggesting innovative ways to increase diverse revenue streams.
- Uphold the standards of operation as a reputable and effective Chamber of Commerce: Governance, Finance, Human Resources, Governmental Affairs, Program Development, Technology, Marketing and Communications, Facilities, and Benchmarking. Hire, evaluate, and replace the paid staff of the
- Ensure the most appropriate execution of high-level Chamber events and programs that include the most senior members of the community.
- Ensure that programming and events increase the visibility, honor and reputation of the Chamber and its members, and meets the needs of the businesses the Chamber represents
- Review and ensure all programming, communication, marketing, and membership strategies are designed and implemented to represent the various and diverse business communities in our region, and that opportunities are fair to all members, businesses, and organizations.
- Challenge, change, improve and remove any policies, practices that risks discrediting the Chamber, Board, members, and/or employees, and gain Board approval where necessary.
- Ensure all team members use communication and behavior that is welcoming and promotes a culture of business development and growth.
- Prepare personnel and operational policies and procedures for consideration and approval by the Board.
- Uphold the Bylaws of the Chamber, and use the Board members for advisory services, expertise and insight when needed.
- Form new relationships and alliance with community businesses and leaders which will help to improve Chamber services or offerings to its membership.
- Ensure that all staff trainings, workshops, and professional development programs are selected and implemented to improve professionalism, job knowledge and awareness of the diverse needs of the greater Prince William business community.
- Develop and implement a relevant set of programs, initiatives, and events to benefit the Chamber’s membership.
- Develop and implement an effective marketing strategy that positions the Chamber as a respected civic leader representing business.
- Direct and help implement the goals and strategies of the Chamber Foundation of Northern Virginia, a 501(C)(3) sister organization to the Chamber, and the Prince William Chamber Political Action Committee.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Board, its chairperson, or Executive Committee as they may pertain to the overall Chamber mission and strategic goals.
EXECUTIVE PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATION:
The CEO shall handle Chamber affairs in a stellar manner, always exuding a professional demeanor and ethical behavior. The CEO will not engage in supplementary activities outside performance of the duties previously described without prior approval of the Board or that of its Executive Committee , which pre-approval will not be unreasonably withheld provided that such service is not with a competing Chamber and does not materially detract from the ability of the CEO to perform such executives duties for the Chamber.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- A minimum of 8+ years of senior leadership experience with a demonstrated track record of producing results.
- A minimum of 8+ years of core business competencies including accounting, human resources, marketing, and stewarding a million-dollar budget to ensure the long-term viability of the organization.
- Evidence of a history of successful engagement, partnering and alliance-building among a broad range of constituencies.
- Experience recruiting volunteer boards and managing volunteer-driven initiatives.
- Evidence of past performance raising substantial funds or managing large campaigns.
- Experience working with diverse group of business professionals; promoting their diverse business needs and fostering collaboration between the Chamber and the business community.
- Past performance leading high performing teams by using effective communication and emotional intelligence.
- Strong understanding of the political landscape for change and collaboration with legislators, civic leadership, and partner organizations.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills both in writing and orally.
- Possesses and demonstrates high standards of integrity, work ethic, trustworthiness, and personal responsibility.
- Elevated level of energy to lead the organization into the future.
- Evidence of the ability to lead, collaborate with, empower, support, teams, and volunteer members who serve in the capacity of committee, councils, chair positions.

EDUCATION:
- Preferred bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
