Hybrid Remote Schedule
This role has the option to be a blend of remote and onsite work if department and business needs allow and with approval from direct supervision. Our hybrid remote work schedule combines three (3) days on premises with up to two (2) days remote.
Key Roles
This position assists a designated area within the Accounting Department in maintaining financial records and ensuring financial transactions are properly recorded. Duties include, but are not limited to, transactional entries, preparation of journal entries, reconciling subsidiary ledgers, compiling data to aid other accountants, and working on projects or matters of limited complexity in a support role to facilitate the Accounting Department in ensuring proper, accurate, and timely completion of various accounting applications, taxes, records, and financial reports within the established policies and requirements of general accepted accounting principles (GAAP), various regulatory agencies (RUS, IRS, Kentucky Revenue Department, etc.), and East Kentucky Power Cooperative.
Key Responsibilities
General—All Areas:
Analyzes complex financial data, extracts, and defines relevant information.
Exercises accounting control over a group of accounts within an assigned area.
Records, classifies, and summarizes financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Ensures compliance with GAAP, Rural Development Utilities Programs (RDUP), IRS, and FERC requirements.
Initiates and processes journal entries into various accounts.
Reconciles sub-ledgers to the general ledger and resolves differences.
Prepares internal and external financial reports, explains accounting transactions, and resolves accounting issues and discrepancies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Accounts Receivable and Billing
Compiles, processes, and reconciles billing and cash receipts through the Accounts Receivable and Billing modules of PeopleSoft Financials ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures.
Manages all aspects of the Accounts Receivable function including aging, collection, and problem resolution.
Performs analytical review and independent validation of Cooperative, Power Sales, and Transmission revenue, ensuring the accuracy of the billing process as well as compliance to wholesale power contracts.
Creates, reviews, and posts monthly journal entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and Rural Development Utilities Electric Program (RUS).
Records and reconciles all investment in associated organizations activity.
Assists in the annual audit process by providing confirmation requests, analysis, supporting schedules, or documentation as needed.
Compiles and reconciles third-party administrator medical claim activity for the company and all other benefit plan members.
Provides historical claim and administrative fee data for annual actuarial valuation.
Completes internal and external reporting as needed, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance including schedules for FERC Form 1, RUS Form 12, and EIA 861.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Requirements
Education and Certifications / Licenses:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related area required. Accounting degree preferred, but if in related area, a minimum of 18 hours of college level accounting is required.
Advanced degree or CPA preferred for General Ledger Accountant and Special Projects Accountant.
Experience:
Zero (0) to Four (4) years of related experience for Entry Level
Five (5) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of electric utility accounting and the RUS or FERC System of Accounts preferred.
Familiarity with RUS, FERC, and PSC regulations preferred.
Knowledge of Excel and ERP, with PeopleSoft applications preferred.
Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
Self-starter with strong initiative.
Must use discretion when dealing with sensitive accounting documents.
Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness.
Ability to perform under changing circumstances and deadlines.
