Performs any assigned projects, procedures or tasks of a routine nature involving the installation, calibration, operation, inspection, testing, repair and maintenance of all types and kinds of watthour meters and associated metering equipment, including power quality instrumentation as well as the protective relay equipment and systems. Participates in on-the-job training or other educational opportunities in order to achieve a level of independent expertise concerning abnormal conditions and higher state-of-the-art technologies associated with Hoosier Energy’s’ metering equipment and facilities as well as protective relay equipment and systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs, at a level of independent expertise, and directs the performance of Meter/Relay Technicians C in the routine installation, inspection, testing, calibration, repair and maintenance of: Transducers; Recorders; Electro-mechanical relays; Solid state relays; Switchboard indicating instruments and switchboard annunciators; Automatic osciollographs; Power quality instruments; and other associated meter and protective control equipment.
Assists other technicians of a higher classification in order to attain expertise concerning the installation, calibration, inspection, testing, repair and maintenance of metering equipment and facilities as well as the protective relay equipment and systems.

Reviews, under indirect guidance, specifications of newly acquired equipment and subsequently performs check-outs and verifications of quality and quantity in order to make recommendations concerning equipment acceptability.
Performs, under indirect guidance, the standard tests and verifies secondary circuits of current and potential associated with equipment in Duty A.
Performs, under indirect guidance, operational tests of various types in order to obtain the verification of proper operation of the metering equipment, including power quality instrumentation and the protective relay system.
Makes sketches, takes notes, draws graphs, completes reports, and provides any other raw data in order to maintain complete and accurate records about the installation, testing, repair and maintenance of metering and relay equipment and reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor(s) in a responsible and timely fashion.
Maintains a working familiarity with and makes approved field corrections to blueprints of meter, relay and control systems in order to verify proper installation, while developing a level of expertise needed to verify practicality; incorporates approved field corrections and modifications onto departmental blueprints so the departmental files are maintained with the latest revisions.
Learns, through on-the-job training, and then applies as appropriate: Fault studies and other system studies towards checking fuse and relay conditions; the analyses of relay settings in order to make recommendations or changes in relay protective schemes; and the analyses of oscillograph charts, relay charts and operating reports in order to ascertain the function/malfunction of relays under fault conditions.
Performs or witnesses the testing of energy interchange meters.
Calculates meter ratios and multipliers and checks and recommends current transformer sizes to protect against overloading.
Assists in making meter registrations involving any types and kinds of watthour, VARH or Q meter and associated metering equipment.
Responsible for the proper and accurate reading, preliminary processing and accuracy of assigned meter data.
Performs all assigned projects within the specifications of Hoosier Energy’s general switching procedures, when directed.
Responsible for the proper utilization, maintenance and security of assigned tools, test equipment, vehicles and work areas.
Keeps abreast of technological developments in equipment or techniques regarding metering, relay and control systems.
Suggests to the Meter/Relay Working Foreman or the Manager, Delivery Services any recommendations about practices, procedures, system requirements or improvements in order to facilitate maintenance schedules, short- or long-range plans and any other efficiencies or cost improvements.
Acts in an exemplary manner in order to maintain and promote safe practices and procedures and participates in scheduled safety meetings, CPR and first aid classes.
Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education:
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED
Plus additional academic background in electronic circuitry, measurements and technology equivalent to two years’ full-time study in electronic/electrical principles and techniques
Experience:
3 years’ work experience minimum with an electric utility or comparable industry where a strong background in the fundamentals of meter equipment and relay technology was obtained
2 years’ or more working as a Meter/Relay Technician C or its equivalent;
Must be willing to supplement on-the-job training with coursework in metering and relay protective device application, installation, and maintenance
Skills and Abilities:
Installation, testing, calibration, operations, maintenance and repair of watthour meters and protective relay system equipment; AC/DC mathematics, trigonometry and vector functions; electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; Indiana Driver’s license
