SUMMARY:
The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY invites applications for the position of Associate Head for Inclusive Excellence. Masters is seeking a seasoned educator with expertise in school-based DEI practices to lead the strategic implementation of the School’s efforts toward inclusive excellence, the intersection of social/emotional learning and ethical leadership, wellness, and community engagement programs that are aligned with the mission of the School.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Associate Head for Inclusive Excellence, a member of the School’s Leadership Team, has three direct reports (DEI, Ethical Leadership, Wellness and Purposeful Engagement) and works closely with faculty and academic and administrative staff. The Associate Head will provide leadership and strategic direction in creating and nurturing a campus climate that is welcoming, inclusive, respectful and free from discrimination, intolerance and harassment. The Associate Head is responsible for developing programs and policies that promote an inclusive environment for all members of the Masters community.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programming
Oversee the development of annual on-campus diversity, equity, and inclusion education programs for Middle and Upper school students, including the Saturday Summit on Social Justice and MLK Day celebration.
Develop ad hoc programming in response to issues and situations happening in or outside school.
Recruit speakers and presenters to work with small groups across campus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Curriculum and Instruction
The Associate Head will teach the equivalent of one course. The Associate Head will oversee and support curriculum development designed to think critically about cultural diversity, inclusive classroom pedagogies, student leadership development, social emotional learning, and restorative practices. Responsibilities include:
Collaborate with faculty members and departments to enhance and develop the vision, direction and actualization of an inclusive co-curricular learning environment involving the study of race, gender, ethnicity, nation and nationhood, class, religion and their intersections.
Serve as a resource on new pedagogies, curricula, and best practices that address the challenges of teaching about identity, social difference, and inequality. Provide guidance to Masters faculty on incorporating these practices in their teaching.
Supervise and collaborate with program leaders in health and wellness, ethical leadership, and community-engagement programming and projects.
Student Leadership and Education
Work with student leadership on issues related to diversity, ethics, health and wellness, and community engagement.
Partner with the Upper and Middle School heads and the Dean of Students to develop programming that advances learning in ethical leadership through student organizations, athletics, and other experiences. Research, plan, develop and implement new initiatives to expand opportunities for ethical leadership and health and wellness learning for students.
Professional Development
Serve on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
Participate in the work of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Collaborate with Upper and Middle School heads and Associate Head for Faculty and Academics to develop on-campus workshops.
Facilitate and ensure faculty professional growth in understanding the role of social and cultural factors in both teaching and learning.
Recruiting, Networking, and Retention
The Associate Head will assist the Associate Head for Faculty and Academics, division heads and academic departments chairs with recruiting, hiring, and retaining a diverse faculty and staff. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Represent the School at relevant conferences
Work closely with administrators and the Head of School to achieve greater diversity among Masters faculty and staff.
Institute best practices in supporting and retaining employees of color.

Qualifications and Requirements
Cooperative leadership style; facility for deeply listening and responding empathetically; ability to build consensus and community around issues of diversity, equity and inclusion; a commitment to building a school culture rooted in curiosity, creativity, responsible leadership, and excellence.
Master’s degree in an educational discipline from an accredited college or university.
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong presentation and public speaking skills
Demonstrated leadership, initiative, energy and sound judgment
Demonstrated expertise in supervision and administration of personnel and programs in a school setting.
Experience in strategic planning and implementation, budgeting, establishing metrics, measuring progress and adapting as necessary.
Demonstrate the commitment and capacity to serve as a caring advisor and mentor for students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, and an affinity for the distinctive mission and character of The Masters School.
Possess organizational and political savvy and the drive and gravitas necessary to achieve diversity and inclusion goals.
Engage actively and visibly with students and the professional community.
