The State Corporation Commission’s (“SCC” or “Commission”) seeks a Senior Communications Specialist to join its Information Resources Division (“IRD”). The Senior Communications Specialist will coordinate the Virginia Energy Sense (“VES”) consumer education program, perform media relations activities for the SCC, complete digital media projects, and contribute to the SCC’s social media channels. The selected candidate for this position will be responsible for: planning, developing, and administering the dissemination of consumer education regarding energy conservation, energy efficiency, demand-side management and renewable energy; providing administration and direction for activities for vendors and contract consulting services assisting the SCC with VES; reviewing and monitoring vendor performance to ensure that all deadlines are met; reviewing monthly invoices, approving all editorial materials, and regularly weighing in on VES strategic communications plan; and leading outreach efforts for VES, including in-person events and media availabilities across the state. The candidate selected for this position will interface with the public on behalf of the SCC across various media platforms; research and write press releases that are quick, timely, accurate, and interesting; and prepare fellow SCC employees for media situations with fact sheets, talking points, and suggestions of best practices. Additional responsibilities will include serving as a primary document editor for IRD, creating digital content, responding to public inquiries received on the main SCC phone lines and via email, and performing other multimedia tasks as needed. This position offers a flexible hybrid work schedule (generally 3 days of telework and 2 days in-office each week), on-the-job training, and a variety of professional development and training opportunities.
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for this position include experience in the communications field and a bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Government, Political Science, or a related field. Some experience in program management is strongly preferred. Ideal candidates for this position will have excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong organizational skills; a willingness to take initiative; motivation to seek new learning opportunities; and attention to detail when proofreading or fact-checking. Ideal candidates will also be able to meet deadlines; conduct thorough research; identify and develop content; see tasks through to successful completion; and be proficient with Photoshop, social media, video editing, and basic graphic design. The ability to maintain effective working relationships with SCC staff and the general public is required.

This position is classified in the SCC Salary Structure as a Grade P-9 or Grade P-11 depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate and is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
