University Prep is seeking a talented, engaging, and compassionate Upper School Physical Education & Health Teacher. Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision and in a collaborative environment, designs and teaches four Upper School PE classes. Serves on the Upper School curricular team and as an Upper School advisor.
Specific Responsibilities:
Teaches at least four sections of Physical Education per semester, with a focus in teaching Weight Training and Lifetime Activities
Engages in curriculum design and development with other department members and colleagues to support the growth and development of our 6-12 grade program with a particular focus on the Upper School sequence
Designs and delivers curriculum that supports departmental and school commitment to social justice and global citizenship
Provides a safe and positive classroom experience through instruction and classroom management
Serves as advisor to 10-12 students
Actively participates in the life of the school
Participates on a grade-level curricular team and attends all department meetings
Vigorously engages in professional development and trainings to improve teaching practices
Establishes and cultivates community relations by maintaining an open dialogue with all of the school’s constituencies
Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents
Since safety and security are everyone’s responsibility, takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities
Performs other duties as assigned
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Physical Education & Health/Exercise Science or related field required
Recent successful PE teaching experience in a Middle School or Upper School environment required
Recent successful experience in teaching Weight Training to high school students required
Teaching Certificate as well as a Strength and Conditioning specialist credentials preferred
Advanced degree in education or the subject area preferred
3+ years teaching experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Demonstrated competence in best practices and content area pedagogy for quality Health & Physical Education
Good understanding of the developmental needs of High School students physically and mentally
Sense of humor, energy and enthusiasm and ability to hold students and oneself to high expectations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work and communicate with all levels of faculty and staff, students, and families
Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
Ability to create an active learning environment that supports understanding, passion, and creativity in students
Ability to prepare lessons to appeal to a variety of learning styles, needs and accommodations
Ability to use formative assessments and strategies in the classroom
Desire to teach in an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative manner, and willingness to teach a variety of PE or Health classes
Experience being part of a curricular and co-curricular team preferred
A working understanding of Universal Design for Learning, University by Design, and Grading for Equity concepts
Ability to maintain confidential information
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
Flexibility, maturity, and self-directed
Ability and flexibility to use Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suites, learning management systems, online meeting and conferencing applications, and operating Audio/Visual equipment
Ability to stand for hours at a time, be outside in all weather, and lift at least 45 pounds
Ability to earn Wilderness First Aid certification as part of professional development
Ability and interest in coaching and/or working in our experiential education program is preferable
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary is $57,643 - $104,801 based on education and years of experience.
