Job Description
The purpose of this position is to provide maintenance engineering services required by Wabash Valley Power Association and the Member Systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functions as the subject matter expert of and displays ownership of Wabash Valley owned transmission and substation assets. Leads the inspection, maintenance, repair, replacement and testing of high voltage electrical equipment in the field; including, but not limited to, switches, insulators, transformers, circuit breakers, lightning arresters, capacitors, and ancillary equipment such as sump pumps, equipment nitrogen systems, station lighting, heating, air conditioning, receptacles and DC control systems to maximize system availability and operability.
Provides technical support to others performing functions such as control wiring repair, troubleshooting equipment and circuit problems, interpreting and evaluating test results, maintaining, testing and repairing high voltage equipment, up to 345 kV. Directs the work of personnel engaged in maintenance or other technical activities on high voltage equipment to ensure safety, quality, reliability and environmental compliance and assure that work conforms to specifications, drawings, safety practices, permits and any applicable procedures and regulations.
Leads the installation, removal maintenance, repair, and testing of Wabash Valley owned mobile substations, including, but not limited to, route selection, equipment placement, and determining connection needs.
Validates the phasing, cut-in procedures and acceptance testing for new substations and associated equipment. Establishes close liaison with other departments and Members involved in major electric construction and other work activities to assure coordination of work efforts and integrity of the electric system. Participates in planning major substation maintenance projects and provides constructability input to Engineering during capital project design activities.
Responds to system/equipment issues or alarms, performs analysis to determine operability or need for repairs, and advises supervision of unusual system events. Ensure proper inspection, maintenance, and security requirements are met for inventoried equipment spares and mobile substations.
Request planned and emergency high voltage switching and grounding operations to isolate equipment for work in substations. May use instruments such as infrared thermographic equipment, corona cameras, meggers, Doble test sets, transformer turns ratio test sets, ground resistance testers, and capacitance meters, etc., to evaluate equipment and systems.
Eight or more years of field experience in the electric utility industry relating to transmission and substation operation & maintenance or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.
Knowledge and ability to operate high voltage equipment, test equipment for presence of voltage, and place protective grounds.
Ability to comprehend and apply technical documentation, including but not limited to substation instructions, one-line diagrams, construction prints, electrical schematics, and LOTO.
Knowledge of Substation and Transmission safety and standard work procedures required.
Ability to meet Company driving standards, including a valid driver’s license.
Ability to obtain and maintain a CLD and/or DOT Medical Card.
Will be required to pass all required company required courses related to substation entry, LOTO, etc.
