Upper School Stagecraft Teacher and Technical Director
Brentwood School, a vibrant and diverse K-12 independent school, is seeking a full time Upper School Stagecraft Teacher and Technical Director to begin in August of 2023. We are looking for individuals who are able to be both teacher and mentor in and out of a traditional classroom setting, creating an inclusive space, placing the highest premium on diversity and inclusion. The candidate must be able to work with various constituencies both in and out of the department.
Position Summary
The Technical Director and Instructor will work with students from 9th through 12th grades teaching all aspects of theatrical design, technical direction, and stagecraft. The position requires an ability to craft and execute an engaging curriculum while managing the logistics of a robust season of theater, music, and dance performances.
It is expected that a successful candidate would:
-Teach three sections of stagecraft
-Serve as an advisor to a group of students
-Serve as the technical director and scenic designer for various productions
-Collaborate with various staff and students grades 9-12
-Recruit student technical theater staff for US productions
-Assist in supervising tech areas of theater, music, dance, and various
school activities
- Supervise and maintain the scene shop and set prop storage, dressing rooms, costume and hand prop area, and auditorium
- Provide overall technical direction
- Design, build and load-in of all scenic elements for department productions
in a timely fashion
- Manage all shop operations and use
-Ensure equipment maintenance and order materials in a timely manner
-Ensure that the standards of safety and best practices are in place and implemented
-Create an environment that fosters open discussion with the freedom to express varied points of view
-Assist with House Management for all productions, including coordinating student ushers and box office personnel and coordinating the start of shows with Stage Managers
-Create an environment that fosters open discussion with the freedom to express varied points of view
-Engage and support students of varied identities, lifestyles, and beliefs
-Other duties as assigned by the Performing Arts Chair; or the Senior Administrative Team
-Engage in professional and personal development and commit to growth in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion
-Participate and initiate opportunities that demonstrate one's growth, knowledge, and skills
-Assist Performing Arts Chair on a daily basis with various tasks as needed
In addition, a candidate should possess the following personal qualities:
-Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theatre and/or Design, Master's degree a plus
-Minimum of two years of experience working in the field of technical
theater/design and/or educational technical theater/design, previous and
ongoing professional experience in theater and/or dance, ideally in
related work in a school setting
-Highly organized with a strong attention to detail
-Must have excellent carpentry skills, limited pushing, pulling, and lifting. Lifting will likely exceed 50 lbs.
-Ability to climb a ladder and scaffold
-Strong collaboration and cross-cultural competence
-A sense of humor, warmth of personality, and energy
-Flexibility
-Must be able to support the work of all designers
-Strong ability to multitask, problem solve, and pivot when necessary
-Must be able to work weekends and nights when necessary
-Must have current knowledge of best theater practitioner methods of technical theater and direction-Excellent written and oral communication skills
COVID vaccination will be required for this position unless candidate has a legally valid exemption.
COMPENSATION: Brentwood School's diverse and talented faculty ranges widely in experience level, from those new to teaching to veterans who are experts in their respective disciplines with 30+ years of experience. Our salary range, of $72,000 to $120,000, includes all levels of experience. Salaries are determined based on years of experience, education, full- or part-time status, and number of months worked per school year. Salary ranges do not include benefits i.e. 403b retirement matching, paid lunch time, free breakfast and lunch, free parking, subsidy toward medical, dental, vision, life/AD&D plans, and generous time off. The pay range is an estimate and is not guaranteed. If hired, your actual base salary will be determined by your education, experience, and schedule.
